These guys never fail to amuse me. No infra, no incentives, nothing and the car makers are being bulldozed into something unreasonable with the current infra.

I dont agree. The auto industry in India is sitting pretty on nearly a decade old technology in terms of safety design and engines, given that the un-educated Indian customer is ever eager to show off his shiny car with bells and whistles such as touchscreen navigation, sunroof and DRL ([frustration].
Unless the industry is pushed into action, they will continue to flood the market with these nick-nacks in the name of latest and greatest. It was only when GNCAP shamed the manufacturers that they (and the Govt) started to pay attention to safety systems.

I am happy that a politician made such a statement. And there was a conviction in his voice. Hope his statements are followed by the actions in policy making so that industry isnt burdened.

Sometimes you need such strong statements/actions from the govt to shake up the industry.

The work has to start from Government side. Where is the EV related policy? What are the goal posts? What is the infrastructure that the government will be putting up in the next 5 years at least? What is the policy regarding EV battery usage and disposal? What are the import terms for batteries and drive trains in short run ? You don’t expect the industry to develop expertise in EV and start completely Made in India EVs in short term , do you? Where are the Public Private Partnership deals? Unless the Government seriously starts taking steps, the industry will just make sporadic efforts , and you can’t blame them. If push comes to shove, car manufacturers will import from China and assemble in India- it will still work out cheaper for them than putting up all new manufacturing plants.
State Governments too will ensure that ICE reigns, as after GST, large chunk of revenue comes only from taxing gasoline. Who knows , if by some miracle, the Government changes, the whole EV policy will be shelved. Weighed against these uncertainties, you can’t blame the companies for being cautious with heavy EV investment

Sure, the government has to create the environment and the infrastructure in a public-private model. And they need to start now. In fact, they have started by creating the demand for a few thousand electric vehicles, this should be replicated in all departments at centre, state and local levels. This will help accelerate the infrastructure. While this may be a bit OT, the only major infrastructure that the government should be doing in all metro and A-class towns is to create environmentally friendly transport solutions. All other development in the form of residential/commercial should be heavily curbed. This will also ensure even distribution of demographic and other resources, rather than choking the major cities.
