The big news, however, is that Jeep is working on a sub-four-metre SUV (Code: 515) specifically for India, although this compact SUV would also find a market in Brazil and Russia. Jeep hasn’t yet given it the green light as the cost targets are proving to be a huge challenge.
A big issue is sourcing a suitable diesel motor, which would have to be under 1.5 litres to avail of the ‘small car’ tax benefits. Fiat’s ubiquitous 1.3 Multijet would be underpowered and, besides, it is likely to be phased out once BS-VI emission norms kick in. A better option is Fiat’s ‘Family B’ engine with capacities ranging from 1.6 to 2.0 litres. This motor powers the Compass and the big advantage is that it will be locally produced as well. It’s possible to downsize a 1.6 Family B motor to 1.5 litres but the 515’s volumes won’t justify the engineering costs. Fiat is still working on ways and means to make the 515 feasible, which, according to company sources, is likely to become a reality if Jeep’s volumes pick up seriously in India.

FCA’s future in India now entirely depends on Jeep and the company is hopeful that a fresh start with a fresh brand will finally get rid of the baggage that has dogged this company for the past 20 years.

Sub-4 m Jeep Compact SUV confirmed for India

Jeep-Compact-SUV-under-development.jpg

FCA has confirmed that a sub-4 m Jeep Compact SUV for the Indian market is under development. The information was revealed via a Tweet by Autocar India. Jeep’s upcoming compact SUV will rival the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, and Tata Nexon.

Mike Manley, who heads the Jeep & Ram brands, gave confirmation of the fact that Jeep is indeed working on a compact SUV for the Indian market that will duck under the 4 m compact car length restrictions.

First indications of Jeep’s intentions to launch a compact SUV came last year in November when a report quoted Manley saying that the Jeep B-SUV will be positioned “on top of the EcoSport” and characteristics will be “very close” to the Ford vehicle.

The smallest SUV in Jeep’s current lineup is the Renegade. It measures 4.32 m in length, which means it will not qualify for the small car benefits. Jeep may base the new compact SUV on the Renegade’s platform or a modified version of it. In March 2016, a report revealed that a new Jeep A-Segment SUV based on the next generation Punto’s platform is in the works, which is said to be underpinned by the Fiat Argo’s MP1 platform.

FCA will also need a diesel engine displacing less than 1,500 cc to fir the small car tax slab. Their 1.3 L Multijet may have been an ideal candidate for the job, but a report from September claims that FCA will not be investing money to prepare that engine for the stricter emission norms coming into effect by 2020.

With the competition now offering 1.5 liter engines which give out 3 digit power numbers, and considering that the Jeep offering would me much heavier than the Brezza, I feel that they would need a bigger engine than the 1.3 MJD II. Though with a VGT, the 1.3 can give good figures, the VGT does lead to more turbo lag, and that reduces the drivability of car in city traffic.
With just 90hp, or even if its 104hp, with the higher tune, still the engine would feel under-powered considering the weight and the lag. I understand that Fiat does not have a 1.5 engine ready with them, but taking into consideration the laws in India, that is something they should work on.

Actually the tuning means more low end torque leading to better bumper to bumper traffic response , turbo lag myth is just a myth
We've owned 3 Ritz , 2 Swifts(Sold to before the Ritz purchases) in the household until last year and now my brother has a Brezza
Never faced any issues in city traffic

I also have a petrol City IVTEC which obviously has no lag but its poor low end torque means constant accelerator input in bumper to bumper traffic unlike 1.3 MJD which moves without accelerator input

Size doesnt matter , there are small engines that make good figures

1.3 MJD is conservatively tuned, thats why tuning boxes like Pete's changed the whole experience
Im sure Fiat can make changes to the mechanicals and also the tuning to bring it upto speed

Trust me , Id love a larger engine but Id rather have a tried and tested workhorse
I hope they localize 1.6 MJD instead

Interesting time ahead ! Meanwhile isnt there a kind of complementing strategy for product line up from FCA and Tata Motors?

FCA brings Compass 4M+ compact SUV-TML brought Nexon sub 4M CSUV with shared factory ,
Now FCA bringing a sub 4M Jeep, and TML preparing 4M+ CSUV with shared power trains !

Nice as their products are instant hits [clap]

I hope they would launch it with 1.6MJD, they are already exporting Compass 1.6MJD.

Hello everyone correct me if I am mistaken but I have also read about the jeep renegade making it to India in an autocar article powered by the multijet 1.6II which was supposed to take on the likes of Hyundai Creta but since I have not heard about any announcements or plans from jeep India to release it which makes me think will it ever wind-up in India considering it's pricing can be awfully close to the compass.

Jeep small SUV likely to use Fiat Panda platform

Jeep has been actively studying an all-new SUV which will sit below the Renegade in the brand’s global line-up. This new SUV will be primarily aimed at Europe and emerging markets as well. This new SUV will be Jeep’s entry-level model.

“A smaller car than the Renegade is very interesting to us and we are actively looking at the project now,” said Jeep CEO Mike Manley to our sister magazine, Autocar UK. Jeep could spin the new small model off the Renegade platform, which is also used by the Fiat 500X, but its compact dimensions are likely to demand a new, lighter platform.

“We’ve seen the general move in Europe towards smaller SUVs, and there could also be a market in Latin America,” added Manley.

The platform strategy at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) suggests that the small Jeep would share its platform with a Fiat model, with the next-generation Panda city car beingt a possible contender.

The obvious route to market is for Jeep to develop its own body and interior on the running gear of the next-generation Panda 4x4 which is sold overseas. Details are expected to be revealed on June 1, in Jeep’s next five-year plan (2018-2023), which will be one of the items in a major FCA business announcement. FCA boss Sergio Marchionne will announce five-year plans for the group and each of its brands: Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Maserati and Ram.

Another possible announcement on June 1, could be Marchionne’s replacement if he retires at the end of 2018, as he has previously planned.

Jeep confirms new sub-four-metre SUV for India

Jeep CEO Mike Manley has confirmed plans to launch a sub-four-metre SUV in India. Positioned below the Renegade, the SUV will become a new entry-point to the Jeep range and allow the brand to tap into India's burgeoning demand for compact SUVs.

The carmaker today confirmed plans for the sub-four-metre SUV at parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) five-year plan announcement, whose proceedings were helmed by Group CEO Sergio Marchionne.

We broke the news about Jeep working on a sub-Renegade SUV (Codename: Jeep 526) back in November 2016.

The smaller Jeep is expected to share its platform with the next generation Fiat Panda and 500 as a part of the platform strategy at FCA. The obvious route to market is for Jeep to develop its own body and interior on the running gear of the next-generation Panda 4x4.

This new SUV is expected to have traditional Jeep DNA, which means that it will have a proper SUV-like design and off-road capability.

The announcement of the smallest Jeep for India was prompted by the company's observation that sub-four-metre vehicles continue to account for a significant chunk of utility vehicle sales. In line with the global trend, the demand for UVs is outstripping that for cars in India, and the last fiscal saw 9,21,780 SUVs going home to new buyers in India, up 20.97 percent.

Apart from the compact Jeep, the carmaker has also confirmed plans to introduce a "three-row mid-size UV" in India.

The company also announced plans to introduce four electric models and 10 plug-in hybrids by 2022 in international markets. A Wrangler pick-up and a Grand Wagoneer will also arrive by 2022.

India as an export hub

As a part of the five-year strategy, Jeep CEO Mike Manley outlined plans to strengthen Fiat Chrysler India's position as an export hub. The company plans to increase production capacity by 1.5x compared to that in end-2017. This would mean increasing the capacity at FCA's plant in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra to 2,40,000 units, from 1,60,000 units at present.

The carmaker also announced plans to double its dealership count and expand service centers in the country.

New Jeep compact SUV to take on Maruti Brezza confirmed – Launch in 2020

Following the immense success of its compact Renegade and Compass models across the world, FCA-owned Jeep is looking at affordable end of the SUV spectrum that is projected to have a very promising future. The premium SUV brand is working on a sub-Renegade SUV which is most likely to measure under 4 metres.

Such an SUV will open up mass market segment for Jeep in emerging countries and without any doubt, India would be one of the primary markets. Talking to Business Standard, FCA India’s managing director Kevin Flynn stated that the mini SUV will be launched in the country in 2020.

This timeline suggests that the vehicle must be already in advanced stages of development. So far, FCA has managed to keep the prototypes under the radar. Perhaps, the vehicle is being tested using the slightly bigger Renegade body as a decoy. There are no details about the vehicle’s specifications but it is most likely to be based on the shortened version of Renegade’s underpinning.

The India-spec Jeep compact SUV is likely to employ an improved version of the popular 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine to take advantage of the sub-4m excise duty benefits. The motor would also give Jeep excellent economies of scale in India considering that it is being used in several cars in the domestic market.

As far as petrol engine is concerned, FCA’s 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine is the likely candidate. The bigger 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol unit could also be in the offing.

Like the Jeep Compass, FCA’s Ranjangaon plant is expected to emerge as the home base of RHD version of the new Jeep mini SUV. In India, the vehicle will be pitted against the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and Hyundai’s upcoming Carlino production version.

Staying true to Jeep’s brand values, the new car will have a premium appeal despite its compact size, and will have considerable off-road capabilities.
