A partnership is in works in the Indian auto industry . Home-grown utility vehicle major Mahindra and Mahindra is in advanced talks with American automaker Ford to use the latter's Chennai plant for manufacturing its passenger vehicles.

The deal, if it goes through, will create substantial financial synergies and benefits for the two companies, while creating the possibility of a larger partnership involving technologies and products (though this is not part of the current discussions).

The talks are at an advanced stage, and several rounds of discussions have already taken place.

The idea is to enable M&M to get access to the idle capacity at Ford's Chennai plant, something which will be beneficial for both the companies.
in the long run such type of alliance did not work. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Re: *Rumour*Ford and M&M tie-up likely for PV

That day it was Tata with Ford , now it's Mahindra .
Fords Chennai unit is that idle ? I guess they are making 10-15k EcoSport per month, may be they are looking at the Gujarat one which is for Figo twins which would be idle due to lower sales !

I hope Ford can produce a longer Wheelbase Fiesta Sedan, Kugga plus bring those Dragon versions to India. This will ensure domestic Sales of Atleast 15K per month in India

Mahindra & Ford mulling over a technical partnership

Times of India reports that Mahindra and Ford are mulling over a global alliance that will primarily focus on joint technology, product and component development. The erstwhile partners who collaborated in the 1990s to launch the Ford Escort in India, are yet to confirm such a partnership in the works, but according to TOI’s source:

Talks are at a very preliminary stage and the contours of the discussion are still hazy.

sources believe that if the partnership comes into fruition, both manufacturers could release a whole new range of global utility and sports utility vehicles as well as electric vehicles. Mahindra’s newly established Mahindra North American Technical Centre (MNATC) will play a crucial role in the partnership with Ford.

The partnership with one of America’s biggest car manufacturers will also help Mahindra take a step towards its ambitions of establishing operations in the U.S, as well as in other markets across the globe. Mahindra’s first product is reported to be an off-roader developed by MNATC, so expect Ford to help with the development, should the partnership receive a green light.

Ford and Mahindra are the latest auto manufacturers mulling over a technical partnership. Last week, VW and Tata Motors signed an MoU announcing their technical partnership, while in February, Japanese heavyweights Toyota and Suzuki signed a similar partnership with the CEOs of the companies visiting India to brief the Prime Minister about the cooperation.

Here is some good news and a solid outlook on how the new Ford-Mahindra JV SUV will look like

This is the Ford Territory , its got a wheel base of 2701 mm same as the new XUV 500 monocoque (W601) platform and 99% similar dimensions as well, so what we might see next year will be a Mahindra and Ford version of this W601 chassis, the good thing is that they wont look like re-badged vehicles, they will look entirely different and will drive differently as well , this version shown for China has a luxurious interior, the one for India and Brazil and South Africa and some ASEAN countries will have much more budget interior owing to cost constraints.
The engine options will be a 2.0 turbo diesel BS Vi compliant one with 155 and 185 PS of tune and 320 and 350 NM torque , 6 speed manual will be standard though an automatic will be introduced at a later stage , it will be priced between 14-20 lakhs ex showroom with lot of variant spread , not much has been detailed on petrol version, so most probably there wont be one as this segment is diesel concentric. For ASEAN countries with strict emission norms a 1.5l ecoboost i3 with 145 HP and 180 HP will be introduced with hybrid tech just like MG Hector , the chief competitors will be Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Jeep Compass, MG Hector . Ford might name it Ford Territory in India as well.

Mahindra and Ford have called off the discussion of Joint Venture. Sharing Press Release:

Mahindra & Mahindra, a part of the USD 19.4 billion Mahindra Group and Ford Motor Company have mutually, amicably determined they will not complete a previously announced automotive joint venture between their companies. The action followed passing of the December 31, “longstop”, or expiration, date of a definitive agreement the organizations entered into in October 2019.

According to the companies, the outcome was driven by fundamental changes in global economic and business conditions – caused, in part, by the global pandemic – since the agreement was first announced. Those changes influenced separate decisions by Ford and Mahindra to reassess their respective capital allocation priorities.

Mahindra said that this decision will not have any impact on its product plan. It is well positioned in its core true SUV DNA and product platforms with a strong focus on financial performance. In addition, Mahindra is accelerating its efforts to establish leadership in electric SUVs.
