SAIC had made an effort to enter India as early as in 2010, in an alliance with General Motors. The duo had planned to introduce five Chinese models, including a small car, a sedan and light trucks. The project was subsequently shelved.

CCI has approved SAIC's plan to acquire General Motors' facility in Halol, Gujarat. MG Motor will move into Halol, only if pending labour issues are settled
SAIC has indicated that it wanted to stay clear of the labour issues. If it needs to set up a new plant, it may then opt for Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu.

Its first product in India is expected to be an SUV, priced in the Rs 15 lakh - Rs 18 lakh range to take on the likes of Hyundai Tucson.

The company will also be borrowing products from SAIC-General Motors-Wuling Automobile’s Baojun product range in India. General Motors has already brought Wuling brand vehicles, like the Enjoy and Sail, to India. SAIC-General Motors-Wuling is a joint venture among SAIC, General Motors and Wuling Motors. SAIC and General Motors also work together in Shanghai-General Motors, a much larger joint venture that makes the Buick, Chevrolet, and Cadillac cars for the Chinese market

Morris Garage Motor aka MG is entering Indian market

SAIC Motor Corporation Limited is reported to have registered a company in India and has started hiring key executives. This makes SAIC the first Chinese automaker to enter the Indian market.

MG Motor India which is a subsidiary of SAIC will sell vehicles in India under the "MG" brand. This MG brand was basically a British brand which SAIC acquired from Nanjing Automobile about a decade ago. Rajeev Chhaba, the former India head of General Motors would be the new CEO and at least seven more people have been hired to head various departments of the company.

The competition commission of India has given the approval for SAIC to acquire General Motors' plant in Halol, Gujarat. General Motors is SAIC's partner in Chinese operations. Now, the final deal will be made if GM settles labour issues at the Gujarat plant. If that happens, SAIC plans to roll out vehicles from late 2018 or early 2019. If not, the Chinese automaker plans to build a new manufacturing facility.

Back in 2010, SAIC and GM were planning to enter the Indian market with five Chinese models which included a small car, a sedan and light trucks. But those plans didn't materialize. Now with local production, the first product in India is expected to be an SUV, which will be priced in the range of Rs. 15 - 18 lakh.

The secret to success in India? Get it right the first time. Indians don't give a second chance once you are on our wrong books.

MG Baojun 530 is a 5 seater SUV which will rival the likes of Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV500, Hyundai Creta, etc. It will measure 4,655 mm in length, 1,835mm in width and 1,760mm in height. It exteriors will boast of an aggressive stance with headlamps placed in C shaped housing on its front bumper, squared off wheel arches and blackened B, C and D pillars. Its sides will sport three prominent character lines to augment its SUV stance. It will also receive an electric sun roof and continental tyres.

Interiors of MG Baojun 530 in India could be seen with the same specifications as those on its Chinese counterpart. These would include well upholstered and comfortable seating, a Harman Infinity sound system, an 8” touchscreen infotainment system with Wi-Fi connectivity and safety features among which will be ABS, EBD, electronic stability program from Bosch, start/stop engine feature and side curtain airbags.

In China, Baojun 530 is powered by 1.5 liter and 1.8 liter petrol engines. Its India spec model would be powered by a Fiat sourced 2.0 liter diesel engine offering 170 bhp power and 350 Nm torque.

This engine on the Compass gets mated to a 6 speed manual transmission but it remains to be seen what transmission options MG will offer. Pricing in China is at 78,000 yuan to 119.80 yuan. Heavy localization upto 80% in India will set the MG Baojun 530 in a price bracket of around Rs 15 lakhs.
