Global automakers have made deep inroads into the SUV segment which is core to Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M). Feeling the heat, the leading SUV maker of India is taking the fight to the next level. It is readying an all-new premium SUV for a late-2017 launch positioned above the XUV500, its current flagship, and smack into the Fortuner and Endeavour territory.

This all-new SUV is, in fact, the next-generation Rexton (codename Y400) and the production version of the LIV-2 concept that was showcased at last year’s Paris motor show. The 4.85m long, 1.96m wide and 1.8m high LIV-2 concept indicates that the production Y400 will be a full-size, seven-seat SUV pitted head-on against Fortuner and Endeavour. The Y400 will be built on a new-generation body-on-frame chassis that’s also designed to underpin a Ssangyong crew-cab pick-up (codename Q300) to rival the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux in international markets.

The Y400’s 2865mm wheelbase is a substantial 120mm more than the Fortuner’s, which potentially could give it far better interior space. M&M also hopes to get an edge over its more established rivals by equipping the Y400 with best-in-class equipment. If the features from the LIV-2 concept are any indication of what’s likely to be carried over into the production car, you can expect a dash-mounted 9.2-inch infotainment screen with a host of functions that include Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. All these can even be controlled even from a rear console.

There’s a special focus on rear seat passengers as well, with 10.1-inch displays in the back of the front head rests and individual ‘captain’ seats that may come with a massage function. Other features you can expect are special mood lighting in the cabin to give a lounge-like experience, electric sidesteps and technology that creates an illuminated path for occupants approaching or leaving the car.

With new safety regulations coming into play from April 1, 2017, the complement of nine airbags as seen in the LIV-2 and an advanced emergency braking system are possible options on top Y400 variants.

Power will come from a choice of petrol and diesel engines that are future-ready to meet the 2020 BS VI emission norms. The 2.0-litre GDi turbocharged petrol engine boasts 225hp and 349Nm, mated to either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. The 2.2-litre turbodiesel develops 184hp and 420Nm through a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox. For India, however, it is only the diesel that will be offered initially.

The big news is that the Y400 will be launched as a Mahindra and not a Ssangyong. It will replace the current Rexton and effectively mark the end of the Mahindra-owned Ssangyong brand in India. The Korean brand has miserably failed to establish itself in this market as can be seen by the sales figures of its lone model, the Rexton, which dwindled to insignificant 146 units in 2016 (Jan-Nov). Hence, however good the Y400 maybe, it will flounder with a Ssangyong badge that has no standing in this market. Besides, Mahindra is determined to establish itself in the upper end of the SUV market and the feature-rich Y400 could just be the product to do that, especially if it’s aggressively priced. According to company sources, the Y400 could undercut the Fortuner by a massive Rs 4-5 lakh.

The production-ready Y400 will be launched globally at the Seoul motor show in March 2017, with its market name. The Indian version, which will get a few design tweaks, especially to the grille, to give it more of a Mahindra family face, is expected by the end of the year.

Mahindra will launch Rexton under their name instead of ssangyong in India.

Re: Mahindra To Launch Toyota Fortuner Rival By End-2017

Well, it's about time! After giving us a glimpse of their in-house R&D strength way back in 2008 (2008 SAE Show highlights - Auto News - Motor Trend) M&M did an instant disappearing act with their original parallel hybrid Scorpio, and one never heard of it again.

So this - the M&M adaptation of the Liv-2 - is certainly a welcome and refreshing prospect, however tentative it maybe. And if M&M do launch it here & they do their usual VFM pricing magic, then there are good chances that the Fortuner could get a bloody nose along with the other prima donnas - Santa Fe, Pajero, Endeavour and co. Just as they did when they launched the XUV500. The one thing that M&M need to really lace up their boots on is their after-sales service & maintenance network. With that in place, they are home & dry.

Mahindra to Launch fortuner challenger code name Y400

iMahindra are not sitting quite and hopefully come with a car that can challenge the mighty fortuner and the endy.

Car under development is code named Y400 and is being developed by Ssangyong. I may be sold as XUV700 or some other name obviously ending with "O".

attached is the official sketch of the Y400. Toyota getting some competition from the local manufacturers. First with Tata Hexa challengine the mighty Innova crysta. and now comes the Y400 to challenge the Fortuner.

My sincere hope is that M&M launches the Y400 under its own banner - M&M - in India. If they launch it under the Ssangyong banner, its possible that they may end up with egg on their face (as far as the box-office is concerned) - as had happened with the Rexton.

Re: Rexton G4 (XUV 700) Detailed Product Video

Nice video! But to be honest, I think M&M are losing the plot. Instead of such high-decibel, low-cerebral (multi advanced 5-link suspension[lol]) ads, they should focus on its SUV capabilities(assuming it has any!), as they did with the Scorpio & XUV campaigns, where their rally winning/participating ability was highlighted.

SCOOP! New SsangYong Rexton to debut as a Mahindra at Auto Expo 2018

While we have known about the new SsangYong Rexton's impending debut at the Auto Expo 2018, sources have now confirmed that the SUV will be badged a Mahindra for the Indian market, but could retain the 'Rexton' name.

Despite having been around for a few years, the SsangYong brand has little recall value, and building a brand would require a significant investment in terms of time and expenditure. Mahindra could also do with a vehicle that is truly upmarket, and the Rexton will be just that, sitting at the top of M&M's passenger vehicle line-up, right above its existing flagship, the XUV500.

The Mahindra Rexton is expected to stay largely identical to the car sold globally but could feature cosmetic changes to bring it more in line with Mahindra's design language. Among the tweaks could be a new grille, different alloy wheel designs and some interior trim changes.

What also remains to be seen is what Mahindra chooses to equip its version of the Rexton with, and what it chooses to leave out. The car on sale globally packs projector headlamps, a 9.2-inch HD touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree camera, a 7.0-inch LCD instrument cluster, cooled seats, Nappa leather upholstery and a smart tailgate. While these would be nice to have, Mahindra will need to pick and choose wisely to keep the car's final price competitive. The manufacturer is aiming to undercut the Toyota Fortuner by Rs 4 lakh, which would see the Rexton range start at about Rs 24 lakh (ex-showroom). It is expected to launch later this year, closer to Diwali.

In traditional SUV spirit, the G4 Rexton is built on a ladder-frame chassis and with a four-wheel-drive system. Power comes from a 2.2-litre diesel engine with rated outputs of 187hp and 420Nm, mated to a seven-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The G4 Rexton measures 4,850mm in length, 1,960mm in width, 1,825mm in height, has a wheelbase of 2,865mm and weighs in at 2,095kg.

Re: New SsangYong Rexton To Re-Launch Under Mahindra Brand Name

Received this in the mail last night (Motorbeam) and it reaffirms the above post from gaddambhargavareddy. I sincerely hope that M&M stick to the 4 lakhs price differential if they hope to compete with the likes of the Fortuner & the Endy! :-

Sir more than the price, first and foremost the requirement is of a well groomed product i.e well finished interiors, well spec-ed engine, smooth AT and feature loaded. Though Mahindra has been in the SUV segment for the major part of their life but with competitive products like Fortuner & Endeavour it becomes equally essential to roll out a product which can compete with them in all aspects including price.

Absolutely Akash - I endorse your point fully. Tho' M&M have been in the SUV business long before the term was coined, they certainly have to pull up their socks as far as overall (as well as detailed) quality is concerned.

TM have taken a quantum jump in this regard with their acquisition of JLR (with its deep R&D reserves) and it is now beginning to be reflected in their current portfolio. And tho' M&M have acquisitions of their own (Ssangyong & Pininfarina come to mind) they have yet to launch a comparative range of products like TM. And it is in this area that I hope M&M prove their worth.[:)]

Sir, Infact as I see, both TML and M&M have to look into this price-band & segment i.e 25-30 Lacs with equal importance. Both of them have to plan a suitable and competitive product for this segment as to mark their presence. Sir, with changing mindset of people with regards to TML products, at present, no one will question a TML product worth 25-30 Lacs if it continues on the same path like their present offerings. For TML the route could be easy as they have JLR in their kitty followed by the hugely successful Impact Design Language. For M&M it is a different ball game altogether. M&M is kind of starting a 2nd innings for the Ssangyong products in India under their badge. Maybe their design wing of Pininfarina might come in handy for designing, but, technically & mechanically this upcoming SUV has to be notches above than all the other Mahindra SUV(s) in India to compete with the likes of Fortuner & Endeavour. M&M has to make sure that this SUV strikes a good balance between performance & luxury.

Mahindra just unveiled the G4 Ssangyong Rexton at the 2018 Indian Auto Expo. It will go on sale in India later this year but with Mahindra badging and a brand new name. We won’t be surprised if Mahindra uses the XUV700 badge on its new flagship luxury SUV, which will sit in Toyota Fortuner territory.

Apart from the Fortuner, the XUV700 will also take on the Ford Endeavour. It’s expected to be a lot cheaper than the Fortuner-Endeavour duo, with a starting price closer to Rs. 20 lakhs rather than Rs. 25 lakhs. It is expected to be sold as a value-for-money offering. To keep costs low, Mahindra will CKD assemble this SUV in India, and will also localize many parts.

The G4 Rexton will seat 7 and will offer a powerful turbo diesel engine displacing 2.2 liters. No, it’s not the mHawk engine that Mahindra uses on multiple SUVs sold in India but a diesel engine developed by Ssangyong for use globally. The 2.2 liter diesel engine on the Rexton will make 178 Bhp of peak power and 420 Nm of peak torque.

It’ll use a 7 speed automatic gearbox sourced from Mercedes Benz. A four wheel drive transfer case will also be available with this engine-transmission combination. A manual gearbox option is not likely to be offered, even on the base trims.

The G4 Rexton will be feature filled. From luxurious material used for the dashboard and door trims to leather seats, the SUV is expected to exude a level of finesse, refinement and luxury previously unseen on a Mahindra product. Powered seats with ventilation, dual zone climate control, 9 airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, Traction Control, an electric sunroof, GPS navigation, an 8 inch infotainment touchscreen based system with smartphone connectivity, HID headlamps, cruise control and LED DRLs, automatic headlamps and rain sensing wipers are the various features the new SUV is expected to pack in.

Mahindra Rexton (G4 SsangYong Rexton) spied testing in India

G4-SsangYong-Rexton-Mahindra-Rexton-spy-shot-India.jpg

Mahindra unveiled the Mahindra Rexton (G4 SsangYong Rexton) at Auto Expo 2018 last month. The company is yet to confirm the name, however. Some media outlets refer to is as the Mahindra XUV700. The upcoming Mahindra SUV was spotted road testing as revealed by the spy shots published by Autocar India.

The Mahindra Rexton is just a rebadged fourth-gen SsangYong Rexton, with a design a little more akin to original Mahindra models. It is distinguished with a unique radiator grille comprising six vertical chrome slats and featuring a gloss black frame, and a full-width chrome stripe above this grille. The test mule is not the Mahindra-badged model, but the original SsangYong model sold internationally.

The G4 SsangYong Rexton is available in 5- and 7-seat versions. Mahindra has decided to bring the 7-seat version to India. The Mahindra Rexton is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine that develops 178 bhp and 420 Nm of torque. A 7-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD system are confirmed, but there’s no word on the availability of a 6-speed manual transmission.

Mahindra will import the Rexton from South Korea in CKD form. Assembly of the SUV’s CKD kits will take place at the Chakan plant. SsangYong will start exporting the CKDs in the third quarter of this year. The Mahindra Rexton will compete with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and Isuzu MU-X.
