The Indian Army is not happy at all with the reliability of its Mitsubishi Pajero SUVs due to recurring engine malfunctions in the vehicles. The Indian Army had acquired around a dozen SUVs from the Japanese company in 2011.

The Mitsubishi Pajero is a true tried and tested rough’n’tough SUV which is capable of flattening huge mountains without much effort. Or so, it was what the Indian Army had thought while buying a dozen or so of these legendary SUVs to tough it out in the beautiful Sikkim mountains against the Chinese Army, which had acquired similar vehicles to help in better troop management. Now the Indian Army is miffed with Mitsubishi and is saying that the Pajeros supplied to Sikkim did not perform up to their expectations and had to be brought down to Kolkata.

It failed due to impure mixture of fuel used by Army to take care of high temperature other wise Pajero is the ruggest SUV and wee can see it in lot of other country Armies.

And by this we might see Safari, Scorpios and may be upcoming Hexa as well in the Army.

So basically, army needs rugged, abuse friendly vehicles and not luxury vehicles.
So for that, Sumo, bolero and may be Storme and Scorpio would suit the bill.

No its not like that, Army mixed aviation kind of fuel in diesel to take care of the cold start & high temperature issues which created issues with the vehicle as company claimed that it had high kerosene portion. Mitsubishi suggested them to use different additives to take care of the issue as per the RCA.

Bolero/sumo might not be the right vehicle but Storme, scorpio & Hexa might, as these got 4X4 setup as well and come close to the expectations

Personally I would love to see the Stormes and XUV being used by our Army over other SUVs.
Would want the tata to build the now discontinued Defender. That would also be a worthy car platform for making defence vehicles.

Mitsu is not at fault, army should use what the carmaker suggests,if not it will cause problems. Blaming mitsu is wrong. Also our army is full of kickbacks when finalizing contracts. Maybe someone wants the new fortuners, which are already under testing.

Toyotas and mitsubishis are used by even rebels, because of its reliability.

Shhhhs You don't say that about the army or the national radicals will hunt you down. [frustration]

Jokes apart! Well nobody wants to accept corruption charges especially if it is against our Army. While the men in the ranks are definitely not part of the kickbacks the same cannot be said about some seniors(well I didn't say it) who make purchase decisions , the Defence bureaucrats and the ugly ministers who most definitely are. But we do not know what exactly the army's problem is regarding the Pajeros, we will know only after "jaach partaal jiske liye ek high level committee bithayi jayegi jo 1 saal baad apni findings submit karegi". But yes when it comes to the armies the vehicle definitely needs to be rugged and abuse friendly. I think a bare bone version of Pajero or Fortuner or whatever they are testing these days will fare far better then those gadgety gimmicks we have on normal roads. These heavy SUV's are ok for normal patrol duty but definitely not as a swift response team vehicle. What we need is more of Hilux-D MAx type of vehicles. I see a lot of these being in use in Bhutan and they seem rugged and go anywhere type of vehicle.

The Army's bad MT maintenance and lack of technical expertise are well known. Talk to any Army driver (except the CO/Flag Car), and they will tell you the stories of how badly maintained their vehicles are, especially on the mechanical front. The Army routinely makes diesel vehicles "sniff" petrol fumes to start them in cold weather when they do not maintain glow plugs on these vehicles resulting in umpteen issues and shortened engine life in these vehicles.
This is also why a non-ECU DI engined, low tech vehicle is best suited to their needs a.k.a the MM550 for example. Even the new gen Safari/Scorp cannot withstand this abuse.
Blaming Mitsubishi is the easiest way to cover up their internal shortcomings in the MT Dept.

And also, the neighborhood around Army areas are very good for one thing. Very Cheap Diesel. If you have lived around the heavily militarized areas you will get the drift how cheap diesel is related to this topic.[;)]

Not only diesel, when there were Nissan Jonga's in the army fleet, the petrol use to be super cheap.
