Following Maruti Suzuki on its 'Mild Hybrid SHVS' Mahindra and Mahindra is all set to launch the Scorpio in a mild hybrid form dubbed ‘Intelli-hybrid’[:)]

This new tech, dubbed the ‘Intelli-hybrid’ will now provide electrical assistance to the engine during driving as opposed to the current 'Micro-Hybrid' system which is basically an auto start-stop unit.

The Intelli-hybrid system will apart from start-stop, come with brake energy recuperation, a larger capacity battery and an integrated starter motor which functions as both, an alternator that charges the battery and as a motor that will provide a mild electrical boost to the engine in certain driving situations. However, the system will not be a full hybrid – it will not be capable of all-electric running.

Interestingly, the new system will only be introduced on the 2.2-litre diesel engine and not its 1.99-litre Delhi-NCR specific derivative as Mahindra had begun work on this system with the 2.2 unit well before the downsized engine came into the mainstream thanks to the Delhi diesel ban. Expect more Mahindra models to come equipped with this tech in future.

By adding mild hybrid technology to the 2.2L engine, Mahindra will be able to overcome both 2000cc ban and 10years ban. While its sad no one is interested in bringing pure hybrids, the Intelli-hybrid is better than micro hybrid.

Mahindra Scorpio Intelli-Hybrid has been launched at Rs. 12.84 lakhs ex-showroom, Mumbai and comes with features like Motor Assist, Electronic Start Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration.

The Intelli-Hybrid system reduces fuel consumption by up to 7 percent by assisting the engine with electric power during acceleration, automatically switching the engine off while the vehicle is stationary (start-stop) and re-using brake energy, which would otherwise be wasted, to charge the battery.
