Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) has asserted that it’s Alto, India’s largest selling car that has just achieved sales milestone of three million units, would continue to maintain strong leadership position amid competition’s attempt to crack the tricky entry segment market, according to a top company official.
“We are confident of sustaining the current sales rate of 2.5 lakh units a year for Alto and are hopeful of increasing it further once the sentiments improved,” Vinay Pant, General Manager – Marketing, MSIL told The Hindu.
Maruti’s hatchback Alto has achieved cumulative sales of three million units in the Indian market. It has taken 15 years and 6 months to achieve this record and is the only Indian auto brand to cross this milestone.
The company feels that Alto’s all-round package by way of competitive pricing, track record of low cost of maintenance and widespread sales and service network set itself apart from competition and helped maintain the leadership position. When Alto was launched in 2000, the price of LX variant was Rs.2.99 lakh. Today’s price is Rs.3.94 lakh.
“We have been able to maintain the price in the sub-Rs.4 lakh range through a lot of indigenisation and improved fuel efficiency,” he said. While the entry segment is expected to witness more competition, Maruti expects the lower car penetration levels in the country to offer huge potential for growth in the entry segment.
