After Mahindra has announced its 1.99-litre diesel engine, following the ban by the apex court in Delhi on vehicles above 2.0 litre engine capacity, Tata Motors also seems to have jumped into the boat, to make a sub-2.0 litre diesel engine.

Six of Tata Motor’s vehicles with engine capacities of 2179cc and 2956cc have been affected since the ban was enforced on the registration of passenger vehicles with engine size of 2.0 litres (2000cc) and above. The company is said to be working on introducing revised capacity engines for these models, so that the sales can resume as early as possible.

Details of the the final capacity are yet unknown, though Tata may announce the size of the new engines soon. Tata Motors is also focussing on the new range of its passenger cars with the upcoming Zica (Atom), Zica sedan and Nexon SUV. These vehicles though are well below the 2.0-litre capacity.

TATA already has a 1998cc engine ready based on their 1st gen Safari, Estate & Sierra models. The engines ran quite well and was used till may be abandoned about 3-4 years ago.

They already have the base engine but they need to work on the metallurgy to make the chamber bear all the extra pressure to withstand more horses and torque. I think they can make it quick and present it before us maybe in a year or so.

Hope that is not too late.

I think its that tough job for TATA because current TATA's 1.05L Revotorq/Dicor and 1.4L Turbo/Dicor/CR4 engine blocks are based on TATA's 1.9L TATA483DI engine block

Whats with the "oh its old 407 block" fear?[confused]

Its not the cylinder block that decides the engine performance. You can use the same block over several generations.

I think old 407 block is more refined robust one so by implementing latest technology like aluminum head high pressure injectors may capable to produce atleast 120bhp

even i believe that this shouldnt be a problem for TATA as Taurean Said the Sierra,Estate and Safari shared the same engine when they were launched to fitting a turbo to it and then a few other things shouldnt take much of a time. if im not wrong even TATA Telcoline came with the same engine ,It featured a turbo charged 1948 cc diesel engine that produced 91 bhp (68 kW).

Tata Motors readying a sub-2 litre diesel engine

After M&M's sub 2 L diesel , now Tata Motors wakes up to the call.

Sales of six of Tata Motors models have been affected since the Supreme Court banned the registration of passenger vehicles with engine size of 2 litres (2000cc) and above. The company is learnt to be modifying the engines affected by the ban so that the vehicles with those engines can go on sale again
Tata Motors' affected engines are of 2179cc and 2956cc. The company official declined to comment on the displacement of the modified engines and the time of their introduction.
