Friends,

India is a big and rapidly growing market for global automotive brands. With the recent unfavorable developments various brands have come under the scanner of the authorities here and the authorities are planning severe actions against them. With the large scale publicity done about the faulty emissions the authorities plan to place a ban on the sale of many models/brands existing at present in India. The later half of 2015 has shook the automotive sector in India to a great extent and people here are now having mixed feelings. Emissions being just one reason, there are issues of safety as well and other health hazards too. So, with such severe policies being planned, what according to you all would be the future of our automotive sector in the coming years? Will the banning of brands/models lead to scarcity of choices which in-turn would make fuels like Petrol and Hybrid more popular and would certain mass-market brands charge a hefty premium on their cars and ultimately burn a big hole in the pockets of buyers? In short, do you see the future of Indian Automotive Sector as customer friendly or will it be increasing the burdens on the buyers? Also, will the banning of brands from India would solve the issue here or is it just a stop gap arrangement for few coming months/years?

Request all the members to pour in your valuable insights on how do you perceive the future of our automobile sector? Basically, the sections to be covered in the thread is 4-wheeler and Multi Axle vehicles running on Indian roads.

Regards

It is a question of priorities and a bit of an irony, actually . A VW Jetta, is designed safe for its occupants with 6 airbags, ESP , ABS is actually a long term health hazard for the environment vis-a-vis an Alto which can be a hazard during everyday driving. Note- the cars are chosen for illustrative purposes only.
In my opinion, the solution lies in multiple steps.
1) Incentivise hybrid engine production -and I mean true hybrids not "stop-start" hybrids. Make it cheaper for both the manufacturer and the consumer.
2) Introduce a graded vehicle taxation. Cars with hybrid engineswill have least, and big diesel cars will have the most (may be even 50% higher).
3) Introduce a 10 year retirement incentivization for people to junk their old cars and buy newer cars. Ditto for commercial vehicles. Beyond a grace period of 10+2, ban the vehicles from the roads entirely.
4) Introduce BS-4 all over India. Why hasnt such a basic step happened is a bit puzzling to me.

5) And finally, ensure that all cars have mandatory NCAP (equivalent) testing, and fitment with front, side airbags, ESP and ABS. If we have to introduce a standard, why not the latest and most stringent one?

I want to have some rules for vehicle modifications. If a vehicle is modified according to the rules,it must be approved by RTO. So that modification doesn't become illegal.this includes body and engine components. We must have a right way of engine swapping system by which a euro 3 car may become euro 5 and it becomes eligible to run with lower emission.

Why not indian car manufacturers offer Lease like in other countries? It would be the best option for who travels less in car below 500km/month. Instead of buying cars they can lease it. It will be useful for people who like to change their cars too often. So they can lease car for 1 or 2 years after they can change car!!
Manufacturers should introduce more hybrid and electric cars. Government should also build electric charging stations in major cities. All commercial vehicles should be bs-iv non commercial vehicles should be bs-v.
