The last two years witnessed a trend in the Compact cross over segment with Ford's Ecosport leading the way.
Come 2016, the trend seem to be a size lower but with the same stance - a segment called Micro SUV/CUV is speculated to dawn.

Leading the pack in 2016 will be the Mahindra's S101, Datsun's Redigo followed by Maruti's Ignis . The crossovers like Vitara Brezza from Maruti and Tata's Nexon will also be launched and together with the Micro segment - this will be the new trend.

Re: 2016 - The year of the Micro CUV's

People who don't like the low seating and low headroom in hatchbacks will definitely want to move over to these. Also adding to it will be the psychological factors of owning an SUV/pseudo SUV.

Eagerly waiting for this segment as we have less choices in mini SUV segment. Many launches is a good sign as choices improve. A sub 4-meter compact SUV is still untapped as only the Ford Ecosport and Mahindra TUV300 are the only cars here.

Eagerly waiting for TATA Nexon and Maruti Vitara Brezza.

True. Launches of the next year are sure to create a buzz in the market. After all, that is the price range in which most car buyers are looking for new cars. And most of the buyers are also upgrading from a lower segment car or looking for a second car. I think this would hit hatchbacks the most, especially premium hatchbacks and entry level compact sedans. There is immense love for SUVs/big butch looking vehicles in the Indian market. Just like what we saw a couple of years back with the Ecosport and Duster. Would wait eagerly to see the upcoming launches and the stir they create in the market.

But all these vehicles will have only Diesel option or Petrol too ?
Datsun Redigo will have a petrol engine (possibility of CNG and LPG options also). Maruti's Ignis will have 2 petrol engine options. Mahindra S101 will have both petrol and diesel engine options. Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon will have both petrol and diesel engine options. [:)] I personally sxpect that petrol and diesel demand would be more balanced (60:40) in this segment.

Interesting year ahead. Would like to keep close watch on how the auto market moves and overall indian economy. GST bill pending for parliamentary nod will boost the economy and also auto sales
