The Tata Nano has been Mr. Ratan Tata’s dream project. But Tata Motors has been given time till 2017 to make the Nano a sales success or else it will be axed.

The Tata Nano was the brainchild of Mr. Ratan Tata whose vision was to see a car outside every household in the country. But the project always faced issues and could never be as popular as initially predicted. The buzz fizzled out after the Singur fiasco and Tata Motors just couldn’t generate enough interest for the car after that. The car finally got launched in the year 2009 at the promised price of Rs. 1 lakh (ex-factory). But the sales weren’t even close to predictions.
Tata Motors could manage average sales of around 2000 units every month which is just about 10% of the Sanand plant’s capacity of 2.5 lakh units per year. The factory was specifically built for the Tata Nano by investing Rs. 4000 crores. The company has done various experiments to increase the sales of the Nano but most of them have failed to grab attention. They have launched new variants of the car along with changes to the exteriors as well as the interiors. They introduced new colour schemes in order to make it look more youthful. These changes resulted in a negligible impact on the sales figures.
The Indica maker has plans to launch an AMT (automated manual transmission) equipped Tata Nano in the near future to target the car at young urban households who are looking for a small car to zip around town. Tata Motors can fiddle around with the car till 2017. The ultimatum has been given by the Chairman of Tata Sons, Mr. Cyrus Mistry. He has mentioned that he may be forced to shut down the project if sales figures do not reach a certain level.

The company is sitting with an inventory of almost 8000-10,000 Nanos, some of which are from the year 2013! Clearly, they haven’t managed to plan the inventory and production schedule well. Otherwise there is no way that a 2013 car would be sitting in the stockyards till the beginning of the year 2015. We believe that the Nano still has the potential to succeed in the country if the new variants are bought in time and marketed aggressively.

I strongly feel that tata motors is wasting time by delaying international launch still NANO have acceptable market share in international market why TATA neglecting [anger]

By adding some extra features like

-Disk brakes
-ABS and air bags still it will be cheapest car in its segment

TATA NANO Already pass UK AUTOCAR crash test so if TATA done modifications on front crumple zone and adding ABS and AIR BAGS its not a big deal to pass NCAP test [;)]

and one more thing according to NCAP test results TATA NANO body structural rigidity is much better then DATSUN GO if DATSUN GO is starting its international market with GO then why not TATA NANO

the main negative in Nano is BRR BRR sound making engine. People instantly associate that sound with Rickshaw. If they target it then it will improve the sales. I have tested the twist the sound is reduced to quite an extent however, compared to Alto and eon it is still noisy. probably a newer engine may prove it to be a boon.

Exhaust noise not important here in my opinion because its natural for tinny 2cylinder motor with short lenght exhaust pipe but ouw indians wont understood that because indians never experienced rear engined cars with small 2cylinder motors untill 2009 we just seen only AUTO Rickshaws with rear engine mount so people doesn't digestify this when they seen in four wheeled car but when it comes to international market its different story they already experienced cars with rear engined cars and noisy 2cylinder motors

Nano is one of a kind .It is a masterpiece creation to replace a two wheeler. Don't give too much push to expect more from the car. It already costs Rs 3 lac on Road. The more costlier it becomes ,the idea behind it is lost.

I agree generalmax.

But they could have given a good dash board, rear hatch opening and same size tires in front with disc brake instead of Bluetooth enabled HU,power window and central lock in the mentioned budget.

According to me the Marketing of the car hasn't been appropriate a more aggressive and apt marketing would have helped Nano to gain the success it was build for. From the very beginning it has been marketed as the car for the common people and not that it is the most appropriate city car, the most convenient one( which i believe it is). [drive]

cheap looking car with a costly price tag. people wont mind spending a lakh more and get a better car. Sound is a major factor as is feels like garuda from back. they should make improvements in engine rather than marketing

But when time pasts and when the better cars are even more pricier, then Nano will be the only choice and in that time the roads would be flooded with Nano's.

For Example: People who like to buy a harley but as the harley's are pricier so people would opt for Royal Enfield and now day by day RE's sales are quite increasing because of pricing.
