In a woo to satisfy car manufacturers the government is trying to water down the safety standards for cars to suit Indian carmakers and Indian conditions.

A close examination of the BN VSAP—or Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Programme—reveals that the specifications of many safety standards, including crash tests, have been reduced (or worse eliminated) in the new rules proposed from 2017. This includes a reduced frontal crash test speed; test of impact on different parts of the body; and the use of child dummies in some cases.

In order to give importance to Safety, the first step should be from customers. The lower the takers for Skeletal models (base and middle variants), the more Auto-manufacturers will feel the pinch, and more they would be forced to bring in variants with Safety as standard.

Unless we as consumers dont demand, these name sake policies will only take things for a ride and bring it on as a taken for granted stuff. "Jaago Grahak Jaago" (Wake up Consumers, wake up!)

I totally second you on this thought, its we who have to raise their voices against such hideous policies. It looks as if the Life of Indians is not worth anything.

To give a feel of reality the Z varaint from Maruti's stable has less than 10% customers.

Everybody knows why Maruti sells like hot cakes, and they sure know how to play down with the general public, who are mainly first time buyers, and they could be classified into 2 categories basically

- unaware of the safety requirement to save their own life

- taken for granted attitude that i drive safe, and nothing will happen / i drive in city limits and dont require these stuffs

Our market is slowly changing, and i vouch, that the time is near, when the general public would turn towards quality products with safety features, which is offered across the globe.

I admired Honda for their stand on Safety aspect when they launched themselves in India, and continued it for a few years, until recent times, when they switched to mass production. [anger]

OT, i wish Vibhor (or TAI core team or any member) could come to our rescue here, with numbers, year on year, on how much is the rise in number of Safety variants, and the decline of any variant (if any).

And to add to the first picture, where our Minister who is here to promote Safety awareness, is himself riding without a helmet. [gun]

What a mockery of the entire system, why dont people think twice before taking a decision??

While I agree that its customers responsibility to force car manufacturers to sell cars with safety kit by stop buying cars without safety kit, that only solves the problem partially. Car manufacturers will keep selling cars with weak structures, unless the government introduces proper safety testing standards and publishes the results.

This move shows how has hypocrisy taken over on all quarters. Reducing Crash test guidelines was the last thing one could have thought of! Accidents, when they happen, do not classify a car as safe or unsafe in real world, and people get injured and even casualties happen. Instead of improvising on better crash test parameters this move has actually splashed "Water" on everyone's expectations from such responsible authorities.

Some pictorial data from google!
