Buddies,

In an effective attempt to curb the rising levels of pollution in India, the government is planning on to directly adopt the BS 6 (Bharat Stage 6) emission norms thereby skipping the BS5 norms. This move by the government shall cost the Indian Industrial setup around INR 50,000 Crores.

Earlier the compliance to BS 6 Norms was effective from 2024 and that of BS 5 was effective from 2020.

According to the official, most of the car companies operating in India would have no problems skipping BS-5 and directly upgrading to BS-6 as they have the technical knowhow to skip one level of emission and upgrade to the next.

Rest of the India barring 33 cities are yet to receive bs 4 fuel supply.
As of now, government is earning almost Rs 30 profit per litre of fuel so spending 50 to 60 k cr should not be a problem for government so as to compile by BS 6 norms.

This is a good step. It is better for Indian companies adopt international standards. Indian companies will upgrade better to be on par with counterparts abroad. Also we need to contribute our part to the global environmental concerns.

India To Adopt BS-6 Emission Norms

Complete bs.
Keep forcing this nonsense when they don't even have cleaner bs4 fuel in more than a few cities. The rest of the county will fill the inferior fuel and get their diesel particulate filters damaged.
I see no point in this unless those buses, trucks and other vehicles stop emitting clouds of black smokes.(which bharat stage are they at?) cars are currently good enough if you give cleaner fuel everywhere.
Also, this stuff ain't gonna work if 80% of fuel pumps keep going with their usual mixing sh*t.

Yes it would not be an issue for the manufacturing companies to skip the BS5 and compile to the 6 but what remains tobe needed is the fuel system where still pan india is not covered for BS 4 norms quality fuel supply.
The kind of fuels available as of now, i agree with silverjet here that first give us the cleaner fuels which would make the environment better with the current norms of BS4.

Buddies,

With strict stand over the rising levels of pollution in the Capital and in line with the NGT ruling to curb the pollution and ban more than 10 year old Diesel, the Govt. is planning to adopt the BS 5 and BS 6 emission norms earlier by a year than their actual implementation date.

the fresh proposal is to implement this across the country by 2019. In he case of BS-VI, the fresh imeline would be 2023 instead of 2024.

Re: India To Adopt BS-6 Emission Norms

Friends,

SIAM has raised serious doubts in regards to adopting BS 6 emission norms straight from BS 4 norms which are applicable at present on vehicles. It firmly believes that adopting BS 6 norms shall severely compromise the safety of the vehicle.

Apex industry body, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers of India (SIAM) has cautioned that skipping BS V emission norms and moving directly to BS VI emission norms could lead to major safety compromises in vehicles. While the BS V (the equivalent of Euro 5) and BS VI (Euro 6) fuels are basically the same, the vehicular technologies are vastly different and have to be sequentially developed, tested and validated with each stage taking 4 to 4.5 years. This, SIAM says, is also why developed markets like Europe first implemented the Euro 5 norm and moved to Euro 6 only after proper validation and stabilisation of Euro 5 technologies, while the fuel was already available.

The government has decided to adopt Bharat Stage VI norms all over India by April 1, 2020. It is an ambitious plan, considering the country's emission norms are about a decade behind many developed countries. Pollution in Delhi is among the worst in the world, often as bad as Beijing.

Re: India To Adopt BS-6 Emission Norms

The question is what is the refining costs involved and impact on engines if fuel is adulterated?

The impact on Petrol engines will probably not be much, but it will bring Diesel engines and Diesel Vehicle pollution Vehicles on par with Petrol as far as pollution is concerned. I hope they have necessary legislation for Defeat devices and ECU should shut down engines if Filters, catalytic converters etc. are damaged.

Also ban remaps or owners doing remaps and if this exceeds the pollution standards.

I have seen mods in automotive forums like removing catalytic converter to get more power. Such unethical behavior should also be covered.

I welcome this move with open heart.

This is now serious attempt to curb pollution. We delhite are already fed up by kejriwal's joke (Odd/Even rule). Study confirms that moving to BS VI will reduce pollution by 25%. I understand it will be challenge but controlling pollution needs a big effort not some gimmicks by current delhi govt.

What a waste of money our Indian governments indulge in ! The previous government dragged their feet on implementing BS4 across the country for few years. Now suddenly with legislation looming large, the present government does a kneejerk response. India should have been BS-5 compliant all over the country by now.

BS-VI complaint car to cost Rs 36k for manufacturer; but 82% less polluting

NEW DELHI: To upgrade a BS-IV emission norm compliant diesel car to BS-VI compliant would cost a manufacturer just Rs 36,000 but such a vehicle would be 82% less polluting, amicus curiae Harish Salve told the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

This information negated the stand taken by the automobile industry, which had claimed before the SC during the last hearing that BS-VI norms were proposed to be enforced from 2024 and if advanced to 2020, it would force manufacturers to invest huge amounts in technology, making their business unviable.

Salve, in his detailed analysis submitted to the SC, tried to demolish the manufacturers' argument. Citing a private study, Salve said to upgrade a BS-IV compliant diesel car to conform to BS-V emission standards, the manufacturer would have to spend Rs 15,800.

BS-V norm did not involve any significant change in engine technology except for improvement in fuel automisation with injection pressure 1600-1900 bar, Salve said. Even a BS-VI compliant diesel car had BS-IV compliant engine technology, he added.

But an additional cost of Rs 20,280 would be incurred in making the car BS-VI compliant to improve injection pressure to 1800-2100 bar and fit diesel particulate filter for PM control and lean NOx trap, Salve said.

In petrol vehicles, upgrading a BS-IV car to make it BS-VI emission norm compliant would cost just Rs 1,200.

The benefits in terms of reduction in emission of pollutants by investing just Rs 36,000 in a diesel car was huge, Salve said. It would reduce PM emissions by 82% and NOx by 68%. In a petrol car, a Rs 1,200 investment in a car would reduce NOx emissions by 25%.

But making cars BS-VI compliant would be meaningless if the fuel supplied by government-owned oil companies continued to be BS-IV or BS-III standard, Salve said. And these oil companies stood to bear the brunt of anti-pollution measures.

"The capital investment estimated for refiners for fuel quality change to BS-IV all over the country is Rs 45,000 crore and to go to BS-V and BS-VI norm is Rs 35,000 crore," Salve said. Salve suggested leapfrogging of fuel norms from BS-IV to BS-VI by skipping BS-V.

"It will be more cost-effective to go to Euro-V/VI level at one go as the two step cost improvement could be avoided. It is clear that falling fuel prices is making it possible to make this investment at the earliest," he added.

Salve said the world was moving fast to Euro-VI fuel standard and by 2017, it is estimated that most countries, including Sri Lanka, would be using Euro-VI fuel. "Most of these countries are fuel and vehicle importing countries and so it could impact our competitiveness if India does not move to Euro-VI level,"he added.

I think current modern cars are made according to global standards and are already bs4 compliant.

actually current euro standards in place are far more stringent than bs normal and many cars are already to. spec.

The green agenda of the government is very much appreciated but skipping BS-V and jumping onto BS-VI is a bad decision. A lot of things can go wrong. The technology has to be stabilized in phases. Without the right usage of a diesel car, it will cost a bomb for the people to maintain a diesel vehicle.

Pollution is affecting health of human being there by prone to many disease like asthma and bronchitis. As a responsible citizen/human being should think of coming generation at least our children who will suffer long term due to such misuse of technology.

So preventive measure to should be implemented as early as possible.

Comparing to other countries we have very high level of pollution and we as less caring about nature, so the preventive step should be first here rather than foreign countries.
