Sumo Gen Next will be on a new platform.
New ‘Raptor’ platform will combine the benefits of monocoque and ladder frame chassis.
This new Raptor platform is that it will break with convention and will not be built on ladder-on-frame architecture, nor it will use a car-like pure monocoque setup. Instead, it will use a new technology known as the ‘Body Integrated Frame’ where, as the name suggests, the frame is integrated or welded into the chassis. This allows the company flexibility with the cars it builds on this platform – for example, choosing a stiff, heavy frame for vehicles that are likely to go off road, versus a lighter one for SUVs which are more car-like. So the new Sumo could have the correct level of stiffness, while still being much lighter and more efficient than its rivals.
With the new Raptor platform, even see a sub-family of new, affordable MUVs and SUVs from Tata Motors in the same ilk.

what happens to the X2 platform that ARIA is built on? Well, not that TATA will ditch it altogether. TATA had plans to use it for all the pickups for the future. Ie the commercial Xenons.

And as per my knowledge, should check this again, last gen Discovery was built on a similar hybrid (monocoque+ladder) platform. And it weighed as much as jupiter. [;)]

EDIT: Oohhkay. SO its planned for 2018. That will be a good time to replace the X2. And may be TATA will come up with new ideas to reduce the weight.

X2 platform is made for heavy duty vehicles like TATA ARIA and SAFARI Storme and its expensive platform and next generation TATA PICKUP's like Xenono will be based on X2 platform

yes Discovery 3 platform is body integrated frame so TATA doing same way

TATA Know how to reduce the development cost using from their dustbin i guess TATA may do magic using existing monocoque body shell from passenger cars weld this shell with a rugged frame to catter off road [:D]

TATA Working On Heavily Revised SUMO Facelift

TATA motors planing to launch re-engineered TATA SUMO instead of Next Generation TATA SUMO based on RAPTOR platform

Tata-Sumo-Extreme1.jpg

You read it first on MotorBeam. It is a known fact that Tata Motors has been working on a new lightweight platform called ‘Raptor’ (by far the coolest codename) amidst its other projects that will underpin the next generation Sumo and is expected to hit the market in 2018. While the project was in the news earlier this year for the optimistic start towards the company’s new generation of products, our sources now inform us that Tata has put the Raptor project on hold due to certain financial issues. Instead, the company will now bring in the comprehensively revised facelifted version of the Sumo soon as a stop-gap measure.
Part of the automaker’s new HORIZONEXT strategy, the Raptor platform was supposed to be based on the new Body Integrated Frame technology wherein the frame is welded and integrated into the chassis, which makes it flexible enough to be adjusted as per the vehicle’s need. It now seems that the development of this platform is taking a toll on Tata Motors pockets and given the complexity involved, it is understandable as to why. Ideally, vehicles are based on either a ladder-on-frame chassis or a monocoque unit, but with the Raptor platform, the company is taking a new direction altogether.
That said, Tata Motors is now working on a heavily revised Sumo facelift that will hit the market soon. Known currently for its boxy and bland profile, the new Sumo facelift will be radical in terms of design and is likely to feature a completely new front fascia taking cues from the new Bolt and Zest. We expect the boxy profile to be retained though to maximise space. The next generation Sumo will be a lightweight MUV that is fuel efficient with reduced CO2 emissions to meet future norms. With the unseen delay in the project, it now seems the new Sumo will hit the market only by the end of the decade.

Re: TATA Working On Heavily Revised SUMO Facelift

Here is my take on things. They invested a lot of money and value into a refreshed sedan/hatchback lineup. But that has backfired. There is no one single person in charge of the company (like a CEO). Therefore the old guard must have weighed in heavily on this decision, which is to re-kindle the popularity of its tried and trusted models. They have nothing to lose, all their production investments have probably been recovered, so no harm in trying to revive popular models. Atleast that will keep the volumes going. I am sure Tata will hit the rural/cab market with a vengeance, and probably relaunch the Indica/Indigo CS with a more tweaked CR4 engine.
I am surprised how this behemoth is being managed though. Is it so difficult to appoint a CEO ?

Expected in 2018, I don't think this Sumo will win any hearts! Even the commercial segment has moved to Xylos, Dzires and (even) Scorpios, all better looking and modern than the Sumo. Only huge marketing and a strong USP can make this car a good seller for Tata.

The face is the same and boxy as of the current Sumo. Only the dynamics and handling of this car (maybe offroad capabilities if the 4x4 is launched) can save this car IMO. Though, being on an entirely new platform, maybe it would turn out on Tata's advantage (like the Duster fared for Renault)!

Re: TATA Working On Heavily Revised SUMO Facelift

TATA SUMO is strong brand for TATA Motors in MUV segment but actually in real sence TATA SUMO Almost looks like big and rough terrain SUV countries like Nigeria and Ghana their TATA SUMO on sale with 483DI TCIC engine with 4x4.

after all may want to try in mahindra way how they succeded mahindra bolero as a segment best mechine but technically bolero is much older then TATA SUMO because its based 50years old mahindra jeep platforms. So if TATA give right facelift with macho looks, refined engines at affordable price SUMO can able to survive few more years

I infact disagree here. Sumo was always a strong point. But luckily for Tata motors Sumo's most of the market share has not been captured by the rivals but it's own new product. Yes, Winger. Most of the clientele has shifted to the Winger. Infact it has managed to even grab rivals share when it came into force. So it was loose Tata-Win Tata situation. Passenger segment share moved into commercial segment and Tatas' passenger market share fell to the bottom.

See the problem with Sumo was always tall box design. With the facelift they should plan to widen the wheel base and track width and plan to make some adjustments to the center of gravity. Also should try to bring down the height of the vehicle and Vista-Bolt-Zest kind is sheet metal changes along with drastic changes to the suspension. Off roading capabilities will enhance the desire to own one.

Re: TATA Working On Heavily Revised SUMO Facelift

Sumo needs some strong reinforcements on the body. The A pillar looks so feeble.Little bit of strengthening of the sheet metal also will be good. The USP of Sumo was and is Space. Good seats and a smoother transmission must also be in the picture.market is huge and any VFM SUV can take it by storm. Can also think about a less than 4 meter SUV out of Sumo? [;)]

Still I wondered why TATA Motors moved tata winger into commercial segment tata should keep it in passenger segment to increase market share and i feel that tata had some good products in passenger vehicle segment but they are neglecting those products by offering with BS3 engines in it examples like TATA winger and TATA Venture both are available with BS3 engines but in their warehouse they already had BS4 engines but never tried to launch with those engines [frustration]

TATA Venture is most affordable 8seated car in country but they never used their advantage
