Based on the poor performance ratings to crash-safety of several popular cars sold in India - Tata Nano, Maruti Alto 800, Ford Figo, Hyundai i10 and the Volkswagen Polo, this year in a test conducted by a UK-based NCAP that tests car crash safety worldwide, the goverment authorities after discussions with the stakeholders have decided to script a norm to scriptfor all new cars that would make them much safer.
The program christened Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP) is aimed at substantially increasing the safety quotient of all cars sold in India, which has the dubious distinction of highest mortality in road accidents in the world.
Hope this gets implemented and see the light by 2016 when major launches are speculated to be coming.

The government is now planning to introduce mandatory offset frontal crash and a side impact test in the next few years for new models of passenger cars on the lines of the European Union. Similar to the European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), the car sold in India would have star ratings based on their safety performance. The higher star of a model would reflect higher safety quotient
The new norms would not just change the safety parameters in Asia's second largest automotive market, but would force major architectural changes in the current models, while forcing the older ones to exit the market
