This new petrol engine family is expected to include as many as three motors ranging from 1.2 to 1.6 litres in displacement. While most of the engines will be four-cylinder units, the 1.2-litre motor will be a three-cylinder derivative of a larger engine, and will be used in the upcoming Mahindra compact SUV, codenamed S102. The Mahindra S102 is an all-new compact SUV which will be positioned below the Quanto. This engine will also be used by the upcoming SsangYong X100 SUV
SsangYong will be sourcing it with Mahindra; this new four-cylinder engine will be converted to a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder for the S102 by Mahindra
To keep costs low, common parts will be used across this new engine range, which is being developed for Euro VI application and beyond. While the engine development is co-operation between Mahindra and its Korean affiliate, it’s the parent company that will take the lead in this ambitious programme. Hence, the bulk of development will be carried out at Mahindra Research Valley (MRV), the company’s state-of-the-art R&D facility outside Chennai. Engine specialists AVL of Austria are believed to be consultants for this project.

Mahindra to offer petrol engines in all their SUV soon.

The engines will be available in the next few years and will be made in collaboration with SsangYong.
The petrol engines will be made parallel to their diesel counterparts and will be available in a variety of displacements. The petrol engines will be made in collaboration with SsangYong which is under the control of Mahindra.

As of now, there will be three engines on offer in the petrol range. The smallest will be a 1.2-litre motor that will be in accordance to the sub 4-meter excise benefits rule. Expect this to be available in the newly launched TUV300 and the QUANTO and also in the other smaller SUV that Mahindra is planning to launch soon.

The other engines will be a 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre motor that will be available on the likes of the Mahindra Scorpio and the XUV500. The 1.6-litre engine will be the same engine that has just been introduced on the SsangYong Tivoli in the European market. The top of the line 2.0-litre engine will possibly only be seen in the Mahindra XUV500 and will probably be turbocharged to provide more power.
