Maruti Suzuki is betting big on producing a smaller diesel engine in its entry-level cars.

The new 800cc diesel engine will be made in house and might save the cost for Maruti Suzuki. The Eeco powered by this 800cc engine might as well be Maruti’s debut in the LCV market. On the other hand, offering a diesel in Celerio will allow Maruti Suzuki to stand at par with cars like Chevrolet Beat and Ford Figo. While it’s not official, Maruti Suzuki might be interested in offering cheapest automatic hatchback powered by a diesel engine on Celerio platform.
The diesel Eeco is expected to be launched in 2016 and will be Maruti's first diesel commuter van.So a small capacity diesel engine might do wonders to more than one car in Maruti’s portfolio.

Re: Celerio and Eeco To Get Sub 1-Liter Diesel Engine in 2016

Diesel for Celerio may produce a cannibalizing effect on both Ritz and Swift. It may be RIP for Ritz just like what Alto did for 800.

Re: Celerio and Eeco To Get Sub 1-Liter Diesel Engine in 2016

Motor Bash reveals claims to have the Celerio Diesel’s Power Output and details!

We have the power figures, we are trying to dig in for some more info! Keep tuned, we also have a slight little sneak into the fuel efficiency figures, a confirmation awaited!
The engine is being tested by Maruti’s engineers in their Gurgaon plant. And we have been able to dig out the power figures for you. As per our sources, the tiny 2-pot engine will churn out maximum power output of around 38bhp. It may seem a little less at the upfront but diesel engine is more about its torque, figures of which still remain elusive as of now.

As is apparent and sensible, Maruti is working on making it more fuel efficient and driveable, with minimal turbo lag. Now there is still a lot of time before the Celerio diesel hits the roads. The single biggest issue, as is expected, is the high NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) levels which would have to be real controlled. Turbo lag is another issue, which according to our source, is an issue Maruti Suzuki’s engineers are working on.

It is not enough Maruti!
2cylinder 800cc is only good for the Alto.

Maruti would do enough of testing before the diesel engine comes into any production passenger vehicles. LCV ‘Y9T’ will set the base for the introduction of this engine in late 2014/15.
Well if not in Celerio, we would see it in Alto[:)]

Definitely not a 2 cylinder diesel in a passenger vehicle. Maruthi will not and should not do it .
It is OK to have it in a commercial LCV but not a passenger car.

Re: Celerio and Eeco To Get Sub 1-Liter Diesel Engine in 2016

What Maruti is thinking is that, the Celerio is a hit and many have preferred the AMT versions. Now Maruti is plonking that 800cc engine to save costs and to make it India's most Efficient Car. They're also trying to minimize the manufacturing and sale cost. So, MS want Celerio diesel to be cheapest diesel car in India.

I guess it's the 2 cylinder 800cc engine in this test car!
Hell no! Sounds like an autorickshaw!
Please MS, give at least a 3 cylinder one. Not this auto's 2 cylinder one!

Seeing that a 1250 cc diesel engine is more than adequate for the ertiga maybe the 800cc engine is ok too.

I hope they have worked on the engine noise. The one in the video sounds horrible.
A fuel efficiency of 30kmpl sounds too good to be true, but if it does, Celerio might eat up the sales of its pricier sibling Ritz.
