Tata Motors’ flagship product, the Aria crossover. Faced with Aria sales that simply refuse to take off, Tata Motors is prepping up a new weapon in its arsenal, the Aria with a hybrid turbocharger. The Aria with the hybrid turbocharger is said to be launch ready and Tata Motors has plans of bringing the new version of the imposing crossover to the market in the next few months. CarToq sources maintain that the Aria Refresh should be on Indian roads in the first half of 2014. What is a hybrid turbocharger?
Hybrid Turbocharger Schematic
The Aria crossover is powered by a 2.2 liter common rail diesel engine that outputs 138 Bhp-320 Nm. This engine features a variable geometry, vacuum suction turbocharger. Tata Motors will add an electric motor and supercharger into the equation. The electric motor will propel a supercharger, that will work in tandem with the exhaust gas driven turbocharger. By adding the supercharger driven by the electric motor, turbo lag will be minimized to a great extent, improving both driveability and throttle response significantly.
The electric motor that propels the supercharger will be actuated through the engine’s electronic control unit (ECU) at lower rpms when the turbo boost is low. So, the electric motor spins up the supercharger before the turbo charger begins spooling up, thus eliminating turbo lag (the time taken by the turbocharger to generate boost pressure). In a nutshell, the hybrid turbocharger mimics the function of a twin turbocharger unit that uses small and large turbochargers for low and high rpm turbo boost.
Launched in 2010, the all-wheel-drive Aria crossover was priced optimistically right from word go. The high price meant that the Aria never managed to get going at the hustings. Even cut price, rear wheel driven variants have done little to spur Aria sales. Amid such a scenario, the facelifted, hybrid turbo equipped variant of the Aria represents the next big hope for the flagship crossover from Tata Motors. Along with the major mechanical change, the Aria Crossover is also likely to get a refresh in the form of smoked headlamps and revised interiors.
