Indian car and utility vehicle giant Tata Motors has just unveiled India’s first ever indigenous-ly developed turbo petrol engine in the form of the 1.2 liter Revotron unit. The engine will power upcoming cars such as the Falcon 4 (revamped Vista) hatchback and the Falcon 5 (Manza based) compact sedan. The new petrol engine family from Tata Motors will use the Revotron moniker.

The BS4 certified Revotron 1.2 liter turbo petrol engine comes with the following features:
  • 1,193 cc with a 75 mm bore and 69.5 mm stroke (same as the 1.2 liter XETA petrol engine)
  • SOHC head with 2 valves/cylinder
  • 9.3:1 compression ratio
  • BS-IV and OBD-II compliant
  • Water cooled turbo charger, a feature similar to the one on the Fiat Linea T-Jet
  • Stiffened cast iron block (indicating the engine’s 1.2 liter XETA petrol motor connections)
  • Asymmetric pistons and PVD coated piston rings to reduce friction
  • 8 hole injectors
  • CNG compatibility
  • Driver select-able Economy and Sport modes

The 1.2 liter Revotron turbo petrol engine from Tata Motors outputs 83.84 Bhp of peak power at 5,000 rpm and 140 Nm of peak torque available between 1,750 and 3,500 rpm. The turbo petrol engine is Tata Motors’ response to the changing landscape of the Indian car market, where petrol engines could be back in favour considering the Indian government’s proposed move of completely deregulating diesel prices.

With diesel prices inching northwards and the differential price between diesel and petrol becoming minimal, car buyers are expected to migrate back to petrol powered cars. Tata Motors plans to address this migration with the Revotron line of new-generation petrol engines, whose focus is on low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels and also high fuel efficiency.

Only 84bhp? Seems to less for a Turbo petrol though! I was expecting 100bhp at least!
Hope the performance is good enough!
Driver selectable modes? seems to be fantastic!
By the way, the name is awesome; "REVOTRON" sounds like a Transformer robot waiting to race wildly![;)]

Re: Tata Motors introduces 1.2 Liter Revotron engine (water-cooled turbocharger )

Not at all satisfied with the specs. It sounds more like Old tech in new engine block.
SOHC head with 2 valves/cylinder?? That's an age old technology !!! Thumbs down from my side.
Generating 85 PS from 1.2 Turbo charged petrol motor is nothing. The N/A 1.2 K-Series produces 87Ps. Why does TATA stick to the same engine block always?? I think the cast iron block will add in to the weight of the engine, thus reducing efficiency.
I hope all this doesn't end with this-Complex engine + TATA's R&D+ TATA's QC + T.A.S.S = a disaster waiting to happen[anger]

its not a disaster move i think TATA is targing to use this engine only in entry level cars with more power(140MN torque No other car have this range torque in its segment Except POLO TSI) and fuel efficient and why they are using old tech in new engine to reduce cost of manufacturing building a all new engine block means its drains more money so thats the main reason they investing money in improving refinement of their old engine blocks by adding few new features like Electronic Turbocharger with water cooled,Advanced C-Converter and aluminium head.

No company thinks do deliver lower specs just for the heck of it. TATA Motors engineers are much more matured with all the bashing they have received. 85PS is no small derivative for our "kitna deta hai" country, who are more interested in mileage. Just making an engine with marvelous specs is not the only demand but integrating it into the existing cars and future models they have in mind and using the shortest period to churn out models for the medium term range vision is must for the company to catch up faster with the Indian car market.

Remember, TATA Motors has introduced a 1405cc 16-Valve Twin camm engine (four valves per cylinder - DOHC) in the Indigo XL which churned out 100 BHP. That was not only impressive on paper but quite good for the car it pulled. But due to the age old and out dated model it didn't do well. Also TATA's first shot at powerful engine went futile due to niggles. But with this refinement, if I am to believe, TATA can improvise this engine block and can bring out a good and competitive engine developing up to 110-140 bhp with Turbo charger support and can be a good mode to enter the international market as the world over is also slowly shifting to lower CC engines, which TML has finally begun to master.

Secondly , convert this engine into Four valves per cylinder - Double Over Head unit and - boom - it should churn out atleast 100-110 bhp easily.

We should lookout in this Autoexpo about a new engine to be launched in the NANO PLUS- the 3-cyl 1050cc engine.

2. What happened to the 3000cc 200 BHP engine coupled to a 6 speed gear box displayed at the 2012 Indonesian auto show (truck & Bus show)

4. Is there any 800cc pertol engine in the pipeline.

5. This is the major question I need to know - Why is TATA not introducing the All Aluminium engine which Maruti adopted more than 10 years back and still continuing the heavy iron cast block to make the petrol engines.
We did ask the questions on your behalf to the Tata Motors Engine Development team but they were very tight lipped on the matters and answered the questions as follows.

About the engines they are not disclosing any details of the other engines that are in line up. They are just answering about the one that they have just launched 1.2 Liter turbocharged engine. But they do have a couple of engines in the line up 3 & 4 Cylinders for which we will have to wait till they are launched.

About the 6 speed gear box they have not clearly confirmed but yes they are working on the new gearbox technology, as of for the 1.2 liter Turbocharged petrol engine is mated to the present setup of gearbox.

About Tata not Introducing the Aluminium Engines was answered by saying that work is currently going on in the R&D department and much cannot be disclosed at the moment.

why wait to convert rather than bring in the converted?

waiting for another failure?

They need cars in the segment of Honda City or VW Vento to bring out these high powered engines which TATA doesn't have. The current engine is enough to run the Falcons to the max.

I agree on your comments TATA also said that they are working one DOHC 4-valves per cylinder with VVT for this REVOTRON 1.2T engine [clap]

TATA's 1405cc MPFI engines are not that bad engines they are reliable refined engines is any body remmembere are not CITYROVER akka TATA Indica is a low maintance refined car of TOP 10 refined cars list in UK [:D]

1.2 XETA engine is a down size version of 1405cc MPFI engine.
