Ford India has slashed prices of its entry level mid-sized sedan Fiesta Classic by Rs.70,000 to Rs. 1,00,000 across variants, with the entry level starting at Rs 4.99 and price top-most variant costing Rs 7.6 lakh.

This repositioning would mean the Classic will now be pitted against sub-4 metre sedans like Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze and the upcoming sub-4 metre sedans from Hyundai and Tata Motors. The dealers were intimated about the decision last week and the new prices will be applicable immediately. When contacted, Ford India confirmed the development. Vinay Piparsania, executive director of marketing, sales and service at Ford India, said the new strategy is in tune with the company's 'Go Further' global promise. "At Ford India, we are committed to deliver on customer expectations by continuous improvements in the value proposition of our products. Ford India has repositioned the Classic starting at Rs 4.99 lakh by optimising efficiencies. The repositioning will make the Classic an even more compelling offer by further enhancing the ownership experience," said Piparsania.

Barring the phenomenal success of its sports utility vehicle EcoSport, the US car maker has found the going tough with the rest of the models. The sales of its hatchback Figo declined 44% in 2013 to approximately 38,500 units. The sales of Classic sedan, too, have been on a downhill, with volumes declining 61% in 2013 to 5,900 units against 15,250 units in 2012.

The re-positioning of the Classic hints at a possible re-positioning of the updated Gloabal Fiesta to be launched in mid this year. The new Fiesta will compete more aggressively with the likes of New Honda City, Hyundai Verna & Volkswagen Vento.

Its to be seen if this is a stock clearance for the Classic before Ford calls it a day for the previous generation model or it is a strategy on the long run to give a run for money to other manufacturers who are battling it out in the sub 4 meter compact sedan segment.

At 4.99Lacs, a 1.6liter petrol engine with 100bhp on tap and the coveted driving and handling dynamics of the Fiesta Classic, it sure makes for one hell of a deal for a common auto enthusiast who cannot plunge lavishly on expensive rides.

I think its just for the clearance of current stock till they last and after which Ford will bid farewell to this previous generation model and make room for the new Global Fiesta as well as the Next generation Ford Figo based sedan which will be its true replacement. But that is being reported to be coming in mid 2015 and I think Ford might drag to sell the Classic for about an year from now.

As such IMO, it is even today a better built, better looking and drives better than all the vehicles in the entry level segment and with the price-cut, it will surely jump the sales by at the least a few hundred pieces per month. What would have been better, had Ford added few gizmos to the car like Automatic climate control, Touch screen head unit, GPS/Navigation system, etc and make it up to date with what other manufacturers are offering in the segment. Just cutting the cost will do less good than had they added a few nice features to the existing list.

Fiesta Classic’s sales have observed a sudden dip and such tactics were bound to be seen by Ford. It could be a last moment stock clearance sale too. Nonetheless, it makes for a deal for budget driving enthusiasts. I still feel blessed as I bought the SXi in 2012 at on-road price of what the same version (Titanium) is now selling for ex.showroom.

Ford is flogging a dead horse. The car sells very few in numbers and not very popular with taxi operators as maintenance is costly compared to Toyota, Tata and Maruti.

IMO , Ford has lost on sedans until they launch a new one.

In my opinion Ford is clearing their stock. Very soon Ford may announce new Figo and Figo based sedan which will be priced in 5 to 8 lakh range and may discontinue the Ford Fiesta Classic. It is a good car if you love performance, quick 0-100 sprints. Infact its one of the only (now budget) car that can reach 0-100 under 12 sec.

Fiesta is a great car ford sold acceptable numbers from past years in hyderabad we can see lots of fiesta's but ford did big mistake they launched all new fiesta and they rechristened old fiesta has a classic its spoiled fiesta image.

instead of using fiesta classic or classic they can re-use Ford Ikon brand name for fiesta classic because ford ikon is a previous generation of fiesta fiesta classic but didnt did that [anger]
