Maruti to raise the bar with new clutch-less car; to be unveiled at Delhi Auto
Expo 2014

The technology patented by Italian component giant Magneti Marelli, is owned by
Fiat SpA. When contacted, the head for India operations Saju Mookken refused to
comment. The company has set up a plant dedicated to AMT transmission technology
at Manesar keeping in mind the company's high volumes.

The third pedal is gradually disappearing from the Indian market as customers
are opting for effortless drive and faster acceleration with these single shift
transmissions. Maruti is trying to take the lead by attracting customers to its fold
without burning a hole in their pockets.

It can good for maruti but bad for other companies. Maruti have always priced competitively and whenever they charge premium (Like kizashi ,Grand Vitara ) .We can also say according me SX4 was not a success . If they price under price under 7 lakhs with good features which will lead Long waiting list and increase their market share . India could see revolutionaries like M800 . It could also destroy value of their so called Best selling cars swift and dzire . It is a good initiative but also disastrous .

It looks like the technology is patented by Magneti Marelli, so no reason why other manufacturers can't also source it, like Maruti plans to do. Very promising technology but only if its priced right in India.

^^Where did you find the teaser??
And read this .

Maruti Suzuki is going on a slightly different route with the upcoming Celerio (or the A-Star replacement) that’ll debut soon at the Indian Motor Show (Auto Expo 2014 - Book your tickets online here)

A source close to the Indian auto giant has revealed some specifications of the Celerio, that’ll be placed within the Rs.5.00 – Rs.6.00 lakh price bracket. Confused on why the A-Star replacement will cost so much? Here’s why…

The Celerio will be the first non-luxury car in India that’ll get an option of automatic transmission from the base variant itself. Yes, you read it right. Celerio is expected to get 3-4 variants and the base 2 variants will get automatic transmission thereby taking the cost of the car to Rs.5-6 lakhs. The transmission will be a 5-speed AMT (automatic manual transmission) most expectedly sourced from Fiat. How do I know?
Maruti Suzuki Celerio - Important Details
ENGINE - 1.0-lt kNext engine
POWER - 68PS, TORQUE - 90Nm Torque
WHEELBASE - 2425mm
Choice of Manual & AMT Transmissions
No DIESEL engine
PRICING - 5-6 Lakhs
VARIANTS - 3-4
AMT in base variants only

In an interview in 2012 (when I was with other publication) with Saju Mookken, Country Manager India, Magneti Marelli (Fiat’s component division), we got to know that they will soon bring the Fiat’s AMT’s in India and focus will be on cars in the hatchback arena and C segment due to the transmission being cheaper than the DSGs or dual clutch transmissions, and still returning fuel-efficiency in the manual transmission’s territory.

The 5-speed AMT will accompany the 1.0-lt knext engine that’ll produce 68PS power and 90Nm torque (the ratings are the same as on the current WagonR engine). It is expected that Maruti Suzuki will offer the automatic transmission from the first variant onwards however there’ll be a manual transmission on offer, but only in the higher variants.

Also, the Celerio will not be as small as the A-Star with the wheelbase stretching to 2425mm (confirmed!) which is in the Maruti Suzuki Swift (2430mm) and the Hyundai Grand i10 (2425mm) range. Expect that car to be spacious on the inside. The source also claims that the Celerio is wider than the current A-Star/WagonR.

The source also claims that the Celerio gets a very modern MID for the driver never seen on any Maruti Suzuki vehicle yet. The MID will deliver info like lane change warnings, adjustable warning volume (door open/close etc), impact sensors and Bluetooth connectivity. With such feature range, the Celerio is bound to divert from the regular Maruti Suzuki portfolio to offer something exciting for the buyers.

This shows that MS in indeed feeling the heat from the other companies and they have to launch new products which are inline with the latest technology available or they will loose their leadership position in the indian auto industry

OK - I found some read on this technology -

Semi-automatic transmission, or also known as clutchless manual transmission or automated manual transmission, is a system which uses electronic sensors, processors and actuators to do gear shifts on the command of the driver. This removes the need for a clutch pedal which the driver otherwise needs to depress before making a gear change, since the clutch itself is actuated by electronic equipment which can synchronise the timing and torque required to make gear shifts quick and smooth. The system was designed by European automobile manufacturers to provide a better driving experience, especially in cities where congestion frequently causes stop-and-go traffic patterns.
