Bookings of the Ford EcoSport have just started in India. Meanwhile, far towards the east in South Korea, an unmarked disguised test mule bearing the Hyundai logo has entered its testing phase with an aim of giving the EcoSport a run for its money.

What you see here are probably the first ever spyshots of the South Korean auto giant’s compact crossover SUV. A quick first glance immediately reminds us about the Kia Provo Concept which was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Even though the Provo was a much smaller car, the Hyundai SUV’s tapering roofine and the window silhouette bear an unmistakable resemblance to the Kia concept. However, the front chrome slated horizontal grill under the disguise speaks the typical Hyundai language. The alloy wheels wear the Hyundai logo, confirming its identity. Although the greenhouse is reminiscent of the Kia Soul (previous and next generations), this is not a Kia.

Hyundai and its sister brand Kia have shared platforms for many cars. For example, the Hyundai i10 and the Kia Picanto are siblings, and so are the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Kia Sorento. However, the siblings always looked different from each other. But this new compact SUV clearly has styling cues of Hyundai and Kia mixed in equal proportions. Has Mr. Peter Schreyer submitted the drawings in the wrong office building?

As of now the powertrain details are unknown. Expect Hyundai’s new range of compact petrol and diesel engines to be on offer. Hyundai has showcased a turbocharged 1.0-liter petrol engine last year at a powertrain conference and this could be ideally suited for this urban SUV.

There is a whiff of the Santa Fe on the front. Given that the car is already out testing, one can safely assume that it would be out before 2016. Rear window line matches to the Provo concept, but this undoubtedly is a Hyundai. If you remember, Hyundai India has announced that it will launch four new products in India including a mini SUV in the next two years. This one could be it!

Re: Hyundai's Mini-SUV (Ecosport Rival) Caught On Test

Rendering – Hyundai’s mini SUV envisioned with insider inputs

The interesting thing is, from the new rendering, the rear of the car also comes into picture. The SUV is instantly recognizable as a Hyundai, thanks to the signature hexagonal grill with thick chrome slats. Even the headlamps have a certain degree of similarity with the rest of Hyundai’s B Segment cars.

The profile is characterized by a flat roof which tapers towards the rear. The rear gets EcoSport like wraparound windscreen and taillights that extend to the fenders. The overall dimensions also appear to be closer to the Ford EcoSport rather than the Renault Duster.

Information regarding the powertrain still stays behind closed doors but we expect a mix of new, and existing petrol and diesel engines to be on the table. Hyundai has shown a small displacement turbo petrol at a powertrain conference which can match the EcoSport spec to spec.

Hyundai India has announced four new products (including the next gen i10) in the next two years and the upcoming mini SUV without a shadow of doubt (though the company hasn’t confirmed) is one of them as the mini SUV is the first entry on every manufacturer’s to-do list.

One Word: Awesome. Dont get surprised, I am not at all impressed with the Muscular cum Fluidic design, but what amuses me is this new segment which is getting hot. I am sure, with more competition, its the buyer who would benefit the most. Not only will he get choices, but also be saved from the monopoly of the manufacturers.

Re: Hyundai's Mini-SUV (Ecosport Rival) Caught On Test

Rendering of Hyundai’s EcoSport rivaling compact SUV

The Hyundai Mini SUV (or if you feel like calling it the Hyundai Compact Crossover) continues to be tested in places like China and South Korea.

Hyundai would endow their compact offering with a Santa Fe-like front fascia. The prominent Hyundai grille used for their SUV offerings along with the headlamps (the basic design resembling that of the new age Hyundais such as the Grand i10 and Santa Fe) give it a very aggressive stance.

The most interesting bit about this rendering is its side profile. The doors and the window lines appear very conventional, though the prototypes caught on test suggest otherwise. We think the Hyundai SUV would be inspired by the Hyundai CURB concept that was shown at the 2011 Detroit Motor Show.Plenty of other opportunities are available earlier as international auto shows are planned in India, US, Switzerland, Seoul and France.

Korea – Hyundai compact SUV continues to test on public roads

Hyundai is developing a compact crossover SUV to get to the Ford EcoSport and Renault Duster. The mini SUV in question is testing rigorously in South Korea. The test mule is still shy of revealing more than its roofline that appears to have taken inspiration from the Hyundai CURB concept.

Under the disguise, the front fascia hints at Hyundai’s Storm Edge design philosophy that characterizes the new Santa Fe.

It’s a little too early to speculate on the powertrain details but expect Hyundai’s latest range of compact petrol and diesel motors to drive the car. The SUV is expected to have well appointed interiors and a comprehensive equipment list.

Considering that compact crossover SUVs in India are consumed faster than they are manufactured, it makes sense for the South Korean automaker to bring the EcoSport rival to our shores.

It’s to be noted that Hyundai India has promised four products in the next two years which includes the soon-to-be-launched Grand i10 and the new Santa Fe.

Rendering – Hyundai’s compact SUV is out to get the EcoSport and Duster

Rendering of the upcoming Hyundai compact SUV from Rodrigo Camargo Losano. The front of this rendering is identical to the many renderings we have shown to you before. The grille is large and reminds you of the new Santa Fe (which in spite of testing in India for a year, has shown no signs of of getting launched).

The rear of the compact SUV is dominated by the tall tailgate which gets the number plate holder closer to the bumper. This design will certainly facilitate easy loading and unloading from the boot. The sides of the rear windshield remind us of the Hyundai Grand i10 which is being launched today.

The compact SUV would be about 4.2 meters in length. There’s no official confirmation from Hyundai though, whether this would be a sub-4 meter offering or not. All we know is that this compact SUV is part of the Korean car maker’s plans to launch four products within the next two years in India.

Overall, the Hyundai compact SUV in this design certainly seems to have the flair to take on the Ford EcoSport and the Renault Duster.

Love the rear and side views; seem inspired by the cross Polo a bit. But the font view (bonnet and grill are too tame for a crossover). The cabin (above the shoulder line) also looks Swift-like.

I know styling is subjective, but IMHO, Hyundai designers will style it with a more aggressive front stance than this rendering.

Rendering – Hyundai’s EcoSport rival gets envisioned again

Hyundai’s compact crossover SUV is still sometime away but it has already caught the fantasy of rendering artists throughout the world.

Testing of the SUV started earlier this year in South Korea. Given it’s dimensions, we expect it to wage a war with the Ford EcoSport which goes on sale in Europe later this year.

The front fascia derives its roots from Hyundai’s Storm Edge design philosophy that is used by the new Santa Fe. However the profile and the rear of the car is unlike any existing Hyundai SUV. The roofline reminds us of the Hyundai CURB concept that was unveiled at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show.

The SUV is likely to be powered by turbocharged petrol and diesel engines. Both manual and automatic transmissions should be available.

The design is not that good, Ecosport sales might reach new heights thanks to the flopic design (oops Fluidic design [lol])
