GM India Suspends Production of Tavera and Sail Diesel (Now Recalled)

General Motors has suspended the production and sale of the Chevrolet Tavera BS-III and the Sail sedan and UVA diesel variant. General Motors has identified a potential emissions performance issue with the Tavera BS-III and a quality issue with the Chevrolet Sail sedan and Sail UVA diesel. But the company clearly states that ‘neither issue is safety-related’. The directives from the company to the pan-India dealerships are to temporarily stop selling these cars with immediate effect.

The company sold close to 1475 units of the Tavera and 2851 units of the Sail sedan and Sail UVA last month, and this news certainly is a big setback for them. However, General Motors has clarified that the Tavera BS-IV and Sail sedan and Sail UVA petrol models remain unaffected by this problem.

While it remains a mystery as to what the ‘quality issue’ with the Sail sedan and Sail UVA diesel variant is, we hear it has something to do with the engine. If the engine is truly the problem then General Motors’ concern has just doubled, because it is the same 1.3-litre diesel powerplant that goes into the newly launched MPV – Enjoy. Having already sold 2177 units of the Enjoy MPV last month, the company would not want this sales figure to dwindle and we hope that the issues are sorted out as soon as possible.

That's the worst thing can happen to GM. Sail twins is the hope GM willing to bate on, and now this. GM needs to address issue and very quickly.

Simply shocking ,

First thing which came in mind when I checked the sails Sedan ,was that I would have definitely gone for this car instead of Manza for the interior and exterior looks as the engine is similar. But sail sedan was not launched at that time.

Now ,I do not have regrets.

Cheevy would definitely bring some solution to this sooner or later.e fo

This is one of the excellent case which proves one should not buy a car without proper research or just looking at the sales charts. Especially when a car is seen from VFM point of view.

This is really a surprise news for me, as present hopes are with just Sail UVA and Sedan for Chevy and if they do so, then it will be a difficult task for them to regain the market again

Although it is bad news, but then it is good gesture from GM to not to sell defective cars and then recall or fix the issues silently.

If I understood the problem, It is related to exhaust criteria which if not met (BS3 & BS4 respectively), cannot sell it till it is rectified.
Finger crossed that they solved it real quickly, before the permanent damage done.
(BTW Is any member waiting for Sail twins here?? Did you get any official communication from Chevrolet?

I am really hoping they do so. Sail twins are really component car with best Value for money in respective segment. and they do picking up sales quite nicely.

That means we can expect discounts whenever they return back with these cars

it will be a difficult task for them to regain the market again

If chevy has been asked to stop the production of sail siblings just due to BS4 norms then they should remove the catalytic converter and retune the ECU according to BS3 norms and start selling it in the areas where BS3 cars are allowed.
And for BS4 cities they can come back whenever the emission problem is solved.

Calicut in kerala Chevy dealer denied stopping booking for sail diesel. Is Sail sedan diesel coming with same fiat national engine or its a variant developed by gm motors and fiat.

Manufactured by GM independently on the same blueprint, with FIAT no where in the picture.

Yes. Maruti (actually Suzuki Powertrain India) manufactures diesel engines under license from FIAT. Maruti also buys multijet engines from FIAT at the time of scarcity, i.e when their own production falls less than demand.

Maruti (DDIS), TATA (Quadrajet) and FIAT (multijet) - the engines are the same except the top plastic engine cover however tuned differently. Another reason why FIAT is still existing even with pathetic sale of their cars.

It is not GM 's fault. Bs3 engine do not have catalytic converter by default which is critical to trap the black smoke ., also use of BS4 diesel in Bs3 cars leads to damage to fuel injector s and engine parts leading to further production of the black smoke.
