Top Ten Hot Selling Cars in May 2013

Amaze, a new kid on the block, has become a top 10 seller in no time. After all, that’s what buyers were waiting for: A trustworthy Honda with diesel mill under its hood.

Look closely and there’s another surprise: Suzuki Dzire has outsold the Alto and Swift! The reason why all carmakers are rushing into sub-four meter territory is now evident.

May 2013 Market Share of Car Manufacturers

Maruti Suzuki which once used to rule the market with more than 50% market share is gradually losing the reign.

Please note that the market share is based on total sales of the specified manufacturers only (i.e: High-end carmakers excluded).

Chevrolet May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

General Motors India must be ‘Enjoying’ looking at these numbers. On a weaker side, Spark is struggling to find fresh buyers from a while now.

Fiat May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

May observed a slight boost in the demand of Grande Punto but is it going to earn any favors for Fiat? Definitely not.

Ford May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

Ford India’s MoM sales have held back as the breath of numerous buyers waiting in anticipation of Ecosport. The countdown has begun. Let’s wait and watch.

HM-Mitsubishi May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

Hindustan Motors sales charts looks no less than the ‘Indianized’ version of Fiat. Doesn't it?

Honda May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

Thanks to Amaze (Particularly i-DTEC), Honda is recovering their strong position back in the Indian market.

Hyundai May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

No losses, no gains for Hyundai India last month. The company has discontinued long-in-the-tooth ‘Accent’ as I predicted in the April 2013 sales topic.

Mahindra May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

Union Budget 2013? No problems. M&M is revising ground clearance of its SUVs as well as grabbing hold of sub-four meter segment to sustain the negative market conditions.

Maruti Suzuki May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

It’s Maruti Suzuki that has been affected the most accounting upto 14% decline in MoM sales with majority of petrol car models in the lineup.

Nissan May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

A not too pleasing performance by Nissan India. Don’t you think a ‘Nissan Duster’ would work wonders just as it did to their partner Renault? Well, we do.

Renault May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

The two SUVs from Renault India are poles apart. One is a runaway success since day one while the other is as good as being non-existent in the market.

Skoda May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

Fabia is another car which has ended its journey in this market last month. The sales of its sedan counterpart took a ‘rapid’ hit.

Tata Motors May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

Tata Motors is losing the market share bit by bit. It’s an open secret that Aria is no blockbuster but its figures for May are a matter of huge shock.

Toyota May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

A considerable YoY drop from Toyota but progressive sales if compared to last month. Someone had just gone green with the purchase of one Prius.

Volkswagen May 2013 Indian Car Sales Figures

Vento’s sales have taken a marginal dip. Not much action this side at Volkswagen’s chart with nearly constant MoM and YoY progress.

The most surprising thing for me is the sales number of XUV which seems to be constantly going down MOM, and even an well priced Rexton's sales number nosediving Mahindra's marketing team has their work cut down.

Little Nano sliding down slowly :(

I wonder whether Tata will make some new offers or changes to increase sales. I really wonder whether they are manufacturing the cars or have stopped and selling the 2012 stock.

Swift(P/D) is already selling under discounts, first time since 2011.

TATA - no comments, digging own grave for themselves.

Honda - Lets see how many days Amaze can amaze people.

Great report 350Z [thumbsup]
We can easily conclude that Indian auto market is in a grave situation now, a look at the near empty showrooms can confirm this. The big surprise is the rise of the new No. 1 Dzire, given the fact that Dzire range starts on the higher side of 6 lacs shows the increasing purchasing power in India.
It is amazing what an year can do to your fortunes just look at Tata and Renault, both are at the opposite side of spectrum, what's worse that there is no light at the end of tunnel for TATA right now, sad to see this state of our own manufacturer.
June is going to be exciting with the launch of Ecosport [:)] lets see how Ford's fortune changes with ES.

I'm impressed with the Amaze and Enjoy doing well for the first month where Amaze does 6k units and enjoy does 2k which is a good start with may being the slowest and least sales figures till date.

What's even more surprising is the dezire's sale pushing down alto 800 further with people (yes the design sucks to the core!), don't know what could happen for the next three months, where the Amaze might go to the top.

Tata has taken a hard blow yes, unless and otherwise they consider doing BPRE they are going to suffer.

Slow GDP and being the most expensive consumable item (for most of the people) doesn't help auto industry for sure. But again dezire selling more than alto tells something else.
1. affordability is increased, Nano/800/Alto isn't acceptable first car anymore. People wanting more features now. (same as bikes also, 100cc isn't commuter bike anymore. 125-150cc is fast becoming mainstream.
2. Tata -- Please go to basic now, cutting corner in QA isn't accepted anymore, even if it come cheaper. Consumers are maturing.
3. Toyota -- Qualis success somehow let you believe that anything with a T logo would sell. Not anymore sir, check your Etios twins, then don't hold candle against competitor. Innova is long on tooth now, at the price point, it very bare bone,
4. Honda comes with bang, but please take care of your new found customers, They are very different than what you used to handle.
To all the company, Indian customers are a different bread, they know what exactly they are talking, Try to make a car that India want, India doesn't care what your pedigree is. (duster anyone?)

Car sales dip for seventh month; SIAM warns of job cuts

Source : Car sales dip for seventh month; SIAM warns of job cuts - The Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Indian car market slipped into its longest period of slump in May with sales declining for the seventh straight month despite high discounts on offer, forcing carmakers to cut production and triggering fears of job losses. Car sales in May fell 12% year-on-year, the steepest fall since February's 25% decline, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed.

"This is a grave sign for the automobile industry as it's the longest stretch of consecutive car sales decline witnessed ever," Vishnu Mathur, director general at the carmakers' association, said. "Even during the 2008-09 downturn car sales dipped for a few months and recovered back strongly. These are worrying trends for the Indian automobile industry," he said.

According to SIAM, carmakers sold 1,43,216 vehicles in May, the lowest monthly sales since December last. The association now expects job losses as the once booming domestic car market is now witnessing regular production cuts by various companies as sales have been declining for the larger part in the past one year. Market leader Maruti Suzuki, for example, had announced closure of all its five plants for eight days in June to reduce its swelling inventory at factories and dealerships as well as for periodic maintenance. "The initial signs are not good. For the first time, in May, retail sales or deliveries to customers were weak," said a senior Maruti Suzuki executive.

"The traffic at our showrooms had declined and the conversion to actual sales has also shown a declining trend," the person added. Maruti Suzuki's domestic sales declined 8.25% year-on-year to 66,342 units last month, while its closest rival, Hyundai Motor India, posted a marginal increase of 0.35% to 32,052 cars. Tata Motors' passenger car sales slumped 49% to 8,927 units in May.

Utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra, General Motors, Honda Car India and French carmaker Renault were among a small group of carmakers that managed to remain positive on the sales chart last month. Analysts tracking the industry say that the worrisome aspect of automotive sales in May is that except for utility vehicles and scooters, all the segments posted negative sales. "Auto volumes last month were not very different from the trend that had been witnessed in the past few months.

Overall weak economic growth continues to keep demand sentiment subdued," Arun Agarwal, auto analyst at Kotak Securities, said. "We expect volumes to stay weak in the near term, though factors such as monsoon and economic recovery will play a key role in reviving demand sentiments over the medium term," he said. Sales of commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses, three-wheelers and motorcycles, too, declined year-on-year in May.
