Tata Motors will gradually replace its ageing fleet of trucks in the medium segment with a new range of commercial vehicles as it looks to ride the strong recovery in the truck and bus market and upend rivals nibbling at its dominance.

The company, which leads the commercial vehicle market with a 60 per cent share, will develop a new global platform in India to cater to the domestic and emerging markets with vehicles in the 3.5-9 tonne segment, said Tata Motors commercial vehicles president Ravi Pisharody.

The vehicles from this platform will eventually replace its high-selling popular trucks and buses such as the Tata407, Tata609 and Tata709 range, which have been on the roads for up to 15 years, though they’ve been refurbished occasionally.

The new range, expected to hit the roads in the next few months, is being developed by Tata Motors in partnership with its Korean subsidiary Daewoo. The partnership recently launched its Prima range of heavy-duty trucks in the 25-49 tonnes range for the global market.

"We are working on a similar platform for light and medium range of trucks,” said Mr Pisharody, adding that it would offer air-conditioned cabins and feature a common rail diesel injection engine to comply with Bharat Stage IV emission norms taking effect from April. “The new range will help Indian customers migrate to the next level of technology.”

I pity the drivers of Tata407, Tata609 and Tata709!

These cabins are almost dated & I'm now happy that TATA has given a thought for AC, more comfort with lesser emission norms.

Welcome TATA!

Tata Motors develops fuel cell-powered buses and light trucks

After showcasing the electric Indica and announcing plans for a hybrid Nano, Tata Motors has now developed a range of hydrogen fuel cell-powered buses and light trucks. The fuel cell-powered commercial vehicles, developed at Tata Motors’ European Technical Centre, are undergoing trial run.

John Richmond, Group Chief Engineer, Tata Motors Europe -
We are looking to run a fleet of fuel cell vehicles to gain experience of how they actually work in operation. That will be a stage prior to considering production.
