Maruti Suzuki to debut WagonR Stingray in India, hopes to regain lost market share

In the middle of a slowdown, Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, is debuting an all new premium WagonR Stingray in the small car segment. It would position this all-new car higher than the WagonR. The new Stingray variant hit the Japanese market last year and carries several improvements that would also be updated in the Indian variant.

By complementing the existing WagonR series, which has been a success for Maruti Suzuki with consistent average monthly sales of around 12,000 units, this tall-boy car is expected to bring back the brand to top three models sold in India.WagonR was the second-largest sold car brand in the domestic market till few years back, but slipped to fourth position in FY13.

First seen in February 2007, Stingray is a sportier version of the WagonR with a more aggressive frontal styling and masculine cues in the rear. While the overall shape is expected to be on the lines of a standard WagonR, Stingray would have thinner and deeper headlamps with sleeker and sportier chrome strip on the grille that runs between these horizontal front lights. The interiors would be also be reworked with different colour contrasts and an integrated gear stick on the dashboard rather than the floor.

According to two people having direct knowledge of this probable launch, it is one of the major products for Maruti to gain volumes in 2013 and should debut during the lead monsoon season. "It's a new upscale variant of the WagonR that would be sold along with the existing car. While the trial production is on its way, the launch should happen in the next few months. It would help the company to space out a new premium position for this car, along with its other offering to break away from the immensely crowded Indian small car market," the person said, who did not want to be named. "We do no comment on any future product or launches," the company spokesperson said.

While the Japanese variant comes in a sophisticated but smaller 660 cc engine, the Indian car would have fuel efficient and responsive 1000cc three-cylinder KSeries petrol engine that also powers the A-Star and Alto K10. As sales of petrol cars are on the decline and to fight the dull sentiment prevailing in the domestic market, Maruti may also debut the CNG and LPG variants that are available in the current Wagon R sold in India.

A diesel variant is ruled out for the time being as the company is still working on a compact diesel engine for its smaller models. Unlike the Japanese variant that is mated to an automatic transmission, the local car would be initially available with a manual transmission for its normal trim levels.

The higher acceptance of pricier cars by Indian customers could play a key role in the success of Stingray, market experts feel. "The Indian market has seen premium products doing well in recent times. WagonR has consistently recorded high sales since its launch in 2000.

A new vehicle would definitely boost Maruti's market share, but the slowing demand is a cause of concern that would be a challenge in coming months," says a Delhi-based automotive analyst, preferring not to be named for his client company, Maruti Suzuki India. WagonR is priced in the range of.Rs3.57 lakh to .Rs4.44 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The new car would be a shade above this band and would be closer to high selling models like Swift and DZire.

I guess Maruti will skip the projectors to keep the costs in check.

According to the auto publications this model will be introduced this year, and it will carry a premium price tag compared to Wagon-R.

The whole design is very funky and sporty which should go very well with the younger set of buyers, according to few articles the test production has already begun and the launch is just a few months away,

Maruti Suzuki Planning to Launch WagonR Stingray Edition in India

The Indian auto market is not in a good shape at the moment, which has affected the sales of all automakers including India's largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India. And this has compelled MSI to come up with different promotional schemes, finance offers and special edition versions of all its flagship cars. The special edition versions of both its top selling cars Swift and Swift Dzire were launched recently. Now to keep the momentum going, MSI is planning to launch an all new premium WagonR Stingray, which will be positioned higher than the regular WagonR models.

The Stingray variant is already on sale in Japanese market, which was launched last year there. The WagonR Stingray version is an upmarket product and has got better fitments and features than the regular WagonR, so we can expect all the improved features to sport the India bound Stingray variant as well.

The WagonR Stingray is a much sportier version of the car, having more aggressive front fascia and muscular front and side profile, still keeping the tall boy's basic design as it is. The other changes adopted by the Stingray are deeper and thinner headlamps with much sleeker chrome strip on grille. The interiors too will be better than the existing variant with different colour scheme and integrated gear stick on the dashboard.

While speaking to ET, two people close to the development said that the Stingray is "a new upscale variant of the WagonR that would be sold along with the existing car. While the trial production is on its way, the launch should happen in the next few months."

However, nothing on the exact specifications was revealed, we hope the car to sport the existing 1.0-litre K-Series engine, which also does it duty to the current WagonR, Alto K10 and A-Star.

@Dharmesh

Once again look at the pics posted by Anshuman, you will difenately find lot of differences like front looks, rear look, interior look etc., though it is a tall boy, but in this new Avatar it looks more planted on road kind thing than the present model
