The utility vehicle segment in India is growing leaps and bounds and India’s largest passenger car maker Maruti is one of the biggest beneficiaries.
With the launch on Ertiga, Maruti invented the mini crossover MPV segment in India and never looked back. The 7 seat people mover created such an an impact that Maruti is struggling to plug the demand-supply gap despite running at full capacity.

In the months of September and October, Maruti pushed back Toyota to become the second largest UV seller in India. However, considering the first seven months’ sales figures, Toyota is still ahead MSIL but the ever increasing demand for the Ertiga means Maruti has a fair chance of beating Toyota to the second place.

Indian UV specialist Mahindra has cemented its numero uno position owing to the strong demand for its UVs especially for the newly launched Quanto mini SUV. However, Mahindra’s market share has decreased to 47.5% from previous year’s 56.5%.

Maruti’s market share stands at 15.4% against last year’s 2.1%. During the same period, Toyota’s share declined marginally (by 0.5%) and is at 17.5%.
Robust sales of Renault Duster has placed the French manufacturer at fourth place in UV segment.

Mr. Mayank Pareek, chief operating officer (sales & marketing), Maruti Suzuki told Financial Chronicle that the company is hoping to “take the UV story beyond Ertiga in coming times”, hinting at the mini SUV based on the XA Alpha concept showcased at this year’s Delhi Auto Expo.

Re: Maruti moves to second position in UV segment with Ertiga .

Its interesting to see that inspite of some great launches like XUV from Mahindra its share has come down . May be the heavy waiting time is taking down it. Also Ertiga/Duster has created a great buzz. Interesting to see how does Quanto play here. But offcourse this segment is becoming more interesting now with heavy competition.

Nice news and Innova is feeling heat from many vehicles, Ertiga being the main competitor which took it down and it was a known fact.
Wonder why Tata is not in second position?

I've heard toyota now being forced to wake to the competition and now are considering to introduce the avanza mini mpv in the indian market.
This should be good news for competition.

The UV market in India is growing up a lot day by day, so it is obvious that everyone will be fighting for the top position.

I'm curious how would Avanza shake up the competition, because it is said to come with only petrol version.

The ford b max it doesnt have the b pillar. Is it safe during a side impact. But it looks spacious and ingress/egress is easy. But i am enjoying it as the competition is heating up.

It is obvious. I actually wonder why manufactures are so late to realize that this is an untapped market in India. This small UV boom should have come atleast 1-2 yr ago.
There are 2 very basic things that makes those UV popular.
1. GC – you don’t need to think for those unmarked unscientific speed hump. Even if you miss one you wont land with broken slam guard or damaged exhaust.
2. Blinding headlight from oncoming traffic. Anybody driven a sedan in undivided 2 lane highway in night will how nightmare that is, I have driven Innova, Xylo, the slight change of angle due to higher sitting made a hell lot of difference.
BTW congrates Maruti, You shown the way for other manufactures what need to done.. The first mover advantage will alway be there with you.. But watch out for Ecosports, Duster el all

No b- max is a MVP based on the fiesta platform .which ford is planning to bring in India as their strategy of bringing 10 cars by mid decade .
That's a good looking MPV, it will be a hit without a doubt and i am sure the same 1.4 ltr diesel mill goes inside when it comes to India.

All we can say now is UV market in India will have good time from 2013.

Not to mention AL's Stile too.
