Ahead of its debut at the 2012 Sau Paulo Motor Show in Brazil, German auto giant Volkswagen has unveiled the Taigun compact SUV, which is based on the underpinnings of the Up! hatchback. The Taigun, which will measure under 4 meters in length is a compact SUV. The Indian angle to this story of course is the fact that this compact SUV could make it to India in due course of time given this particular comment by the Volkswagen Sales Chief Christian Klingler,

“A small SUV would have promising market potential for example in India, South America, Mexico and partly in China.”
The Taigun is a four-seater powered by a 1.0-litre TSI engine that produces 110 PS and 175 Nm. Weighing just 985 kg, it can speed all the way up to 186 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds, while delivering a combined fuel consumption figure of 22.2 kpl.

I am sure they can easily source an Diesel Engine for this model for our market.

Volkswagen Taigun to arrive in early 2016

Volkswagen has planned the launch of the Taigun, a baby SUV shown in the concept form at Sao Paulo last year, in the beginning of 2016. The Taigun would be positioned as the younger sibling of the Tiguan which is the second best selling SUV in the world. India doesn’t get this car but a premium derivative of the Tiguan, the Audi Q3, is sold here enjoying good demand.

That aside, at 15,000 Euros, the VW Taigun is markedly cheaper than the Tiguan (about 5,000 Euros cheaper). Dimensionally it would be much smaller as well. At 3.86m in length, AutoBild says it is roughly 32cm longer than the Up!.

The Taigun would sit on the undercarriage of the Up! and hence fuel efficient three-cylinder engines with front-wheel drive layout would automatically transfer into the Taigun’s underbody.

To give it the visual pop, exterior embellishment would include generous servings of chrome, shiny appliques and LED technology.

The Taigun’s priority markets would be China, India, Russia and Brazil where the Renault Duster is today at the top of the segment (except China of course).

The Taigun would play the Germans’ urban SUV with market positioning as alternative to expensive hatchbacks and entry-level sedans. If dimensions and powertrain specifications are duplicated from the concept, the Taigun, like the Polo, would get a considerable excise cut in India.

If that isn’t enough to challenge competition in pricing, Volkswagen would have to decontent the Taigun, cut down on the sound deadening and de-spec the engine, tires and materials.

Volkswagen Taigun in Buenos Aires

Volkswagen has shown the VW Taigun concept at the ongoing Buenos Aires Motor Show in Argentina, South America.

The Taigun is VW’s answer to the mini SUV segment which is proving to be the popcorn of the automotive industry in places like India and South America. The world debut of the Taigun took place at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in October last year.

A significant advantage VW has with the Taigun is that they need not re-engineer the car to meet the Indian small car regulations. The Taigun (in concept form) measures only 3,859mm bumper-to-bumper classifying it as a small car.

The Up!-based Taigun concept features a 1.0-liter TSI engine (since it is smaller than 1.2-liters in displacement, small car regulations continue to apply) producing 110 PS of power and 175 Nm of torque.

Thanks to the light kerb weight of 985 kg, the Taigun can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 9.2 seconds and reach a 186 km/h top speed. The Taigun does all this whilst still delivering 22.2 km/l.

The cabin follows a minimalist approach, drawing a lot of inspiration from the VW Up! The body colored dashboard and door trims endows the cabin with a fresh feeling in spite of being cost conservative.

When it enters production sometime in 2016, the Taigun will compete with the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Peugeot 2008, Renault Duster and the Nissan Terrano.

VW may show a more production-ready Taigun in Frankfurt

VW Taigun mini SUV could be shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month and that it would be a more production-ready version.

The Taigun, which is a sub-4 meter crossover, was shown in its concept form at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show. Built on the VW Up!’s platform, the Taigun is aimed at emerging markets such as Brazil, India and China where there is a craze for such cars.

According to the rumors, VW does not want to miss out showing the Taigun at an event as big as the Frankfurt Motor Show. Just to give you an idea of how important this show is for the German giant, take a look at the following facts the company released in a press announcement:
•Planning period for the VW stand at IAA: 11 months
•Area of the stand: 8,893 m2
•Length and width of the stand: 114.5 x 78 m
•Number of vehicles on display: 53
•Number of architects and designers used for making the stand: 18

Even as you read this, the VW stand has been nearly built (work started on August 14th) and it would take the company nearly a month to complete building the two-storey stand for the 24-day long exhibition.

Production of the Taigun is expected to commence in 2015-16 and until then VW will be relying on enhanced product extensions such as the Cross Fox (sold in Brazil) and the Cross Polo (which was recently launched in India) hoping that their pretentious soft roader-like appearances would lure them customers.
