Downsizing has been the name of the game, with car makers across the world. By downsizing, we mean the engines of cars, which are getting smaller and smaller even though they’re being tweaked to produce more power and deliver better mileage. German luxury car maker BMW has now unveiled downsized three cylinder turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines that come with a cubic capacity of 1.5 liters. Both the petrol and diesel engines are downsized units of the famed inline-six cylinder units that BMW offers on its range of luxury cars like the 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 series models.
Both the turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines come with an inline 3 cylinder layout and are available with a range of power outputs. These engines will be used on the BMW 1 Series car models, the Mini range of sporty hatchbacks and also on the BMW i8 hybrid supercar for now. Going forward, these engines are expected to find their way onto a range of BMW products. Their three cylinder layouts gives these engines good fuel economy, which is the growing need of the car buyers across the world. Turbo charging means that these engines will also be able to deliver impressive amounts of power and torque, to make for some exciting performance, a trait that BMW cars have always been renowned for.
The 1.5 Liter turbo petrol engine will be available in power outputs ranging from 120 to 220 Bhp and torque outputs ranging from 180 Nm to 240 Nm. The 1.5 Liter turbo diesel engines on the other hand, will be available with power outputs between 80 and 182 Bhp and torque outputs between 225 and 330 Nm. Apart from turbo charging, direct injection and variable valve timing are two other technologies that make these downsized 3 cylinder petrol and diesel engines both powerful as well as fuel efficient. As three cylinder engines are inherently vibey, due to their unbalanced layout, BMW has outfitted both the petrol and diesel engines with a torsional damper that makes these engines smooth and revvy.
To keep costs low, the petrol and diesel engines share about 60% of common components and 40% of the structure, allowing BMW to build these engines for lot lesser money than the bigger engines in its range. These cost savings are expected to translate into higher profits for BMW as well as lower prices for the car buyer. All in all, the trend of three cylinder turbo petrol engines is something that is here to stay given the fact that more and more car makers across the world are adopting this fuel efficient layout, which is also being made powerful and torque through forced induction.
