Leaf, a 100 per cent electric car, is the latest Japanese Car of the Year. Interesting thing is that it is the only electric car in 32 year old history of this award to have won it. In addition to this award, it has also won European Car of the Year (2011) and World Car of the Year Awards. In European Award, it beat Alfa Romeo, although very marginally.

Transmission: Front wheel drive. Automatic clutch. Single gear.

When shall we get that soundless, smokeless vehicle.

If i remember right, in one of the car show, Leaf was designed to be released with Solar pannel on the roof which can be used for charging or for AC even without the enigne turned on.
Nissan was planning for this for other models too.
I am not sure of end restuls though.

Nissan Leaf is enjoying the media limelight from sometime. Just like most of the other Hybrids, its design looks appealing. But as far as its launch in India is concerned, I feel that manufacturers are still hesitant to bring such cars here. Firstly, they will be a new concept for mass-public, secondly, they cost a lot and in order to bring down the costs, it will have to be manufactured right here itself but then, this again takes us back to the square one whether people will accept them or not. So companies are uncertain to put their money on this but I’m sure that in future the scenario is ought to change because someone has to take this initiative.

These cars are not ideal for Indian roads as per my discussions with my mate
He is from Delhi, we were talking about these hybrids.
He made one point , he said in India traffic is insane, the car would run ideally only if your doing long distance because the hybrid system starts at certain point and if that doesn't work what is the point of having one .

what do you guys think?

The design looks appealing and quite fresh! Talking about the practicality, that is totally different ball game altogether. It is very difficult to run electric vehicles in India IMO. Traffic management and traffic sense is still not mature and I believe an electric vehicle will run out of charge just standing in mindless traffic jams here [:)]

It will take 20 more years to see these kind of cars onroad here in India.
Alteast one company is thinking about bringing this type of vehicle here.

The problem it said was of infrastructure i.e. electricity points. Considering the prices of petrol (and of diesel once it is deregulated, say in 5-6 years), these vehicles shall be here in near future.

When Nissan wants to set a speed record, you'd expect it to use the GT-R to get there. Or maybe one of its myriad racing cars – it does, after all, power the bulk of the LMP2 racers on the grid at Le Mans, not to mention the experimental DeltaWing. But the Leaf? Sure, maybe for emissions-free motoring, but not for speed.

Yet it's the Leaf in which Nissan will attempt to set a new Guinness World Record at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. And not the Nismo RC version, either, though that will be on hand for the festival as well. No, Nissan will attempt a world record in a bone-stock electric Leaf... in reverse.

Because EVs like the Leaf power their wheels directly from their electric motors, they should – in theory at least – be able to drive just as fast in reverse as they do moving forward. To test that theory, Nissan is brining the Leaf to Goodwood where its stunt driver Terry Grant (the same guy who drove a Juke on two wheels up the hill at the event last year) will attempt to drive the entire course backwards.

In the process, Nissan hopes that Grant and the Leaf will set a new record for the fastest time over a distance of one mile in reverse. And considering the twist, turns, peaks and dips of the Goodwood circuit, that likely won't prove too easy.

Nissan Leaf to get extended range in 2013.

The Japanese based automaker Nissan is currently working on an improved version of the Leaf, which will hit the market next year with an extended range.

After the newest version of the Nissan Leaf has been officially revealed in its homeland in late 2011, the car manufacturer is planning to introduce an improved version of the model, which is expected to get an extended range once it will finally hit the market next year. According to the guys at insideevs.com, the updated Nissan Leaf will come with a 25 percent improved range, which means that the model will be able to travel for 200 km with a single “tank of fuel”.
Our source is also saying that this performance will happen thanks to the upgrading of the lithium-ion battery pack and also by improving the efficiency of the electric motors. The updated Nissan Leaf will launched in Japan at first, which will come as an entry-level version and it will be priced at approximately 26,000 euros (2.5 million YEN), which is significantly cheaper than the cheapest variant available now, at 38,000 euros (3.7 million YEN). More details on the updated Nissan Leaf might be announced later on this year.

Participated in the survey. Leaf now comes with 200 kms range. Full recharge takes 8 hours with normal connection and 30 minutes at charging station.
