Friends,

It seems the dieselgate of VW was just the tip of the iceberg. Now, the French car maker Renault's models have been brought under the lenses for failing emission tests. The stocks of Renault have been hit severely with this disclosure.

France’s transport and environment ministry also disclosed that Renault and other manufacturers failed special emissions tests introduced in the wake of the Volkswagen’s diesel-engine scandal.
In October, Ms. formed the commission to test 100 cars across the country’s auto industry, including 25 models by Renault. Some cars tested by the commission, including one Renault model, exceeded legal limits on nitrous oxide and carbon dioxide,

Biggest Emission Scandal- Renault

Renault accused of cheating Emission tests for the past 25 years, this if true, will put the VW's diesel-gate episode look pale in comparison.

According to the Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Prevention (DGCCRF) report, testing showed significant discrepancies between the results for Renault models in the lab and on the road. For example, the evaluations found a Captur exceeded carbon dioxide emissions rules by 377 percent, and the Clio VI was 305 percent over the limit.

Renault was accused of using a “fraudulent device” to alter its vehicles’ emissions during testing for up to 25 years.
The results give rise to suspicions that a special device modified the performance of the motor to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions during the specific conditions of certification tests.

Renault's entire senior management team is implicated in an investigation into emissions test cheating, news agency Agence France-Presse has reported.

The agency says documents it has obtained show that the "entire chain of management", including chairman and chief executive Carlos Ghosn, were involved in the suspected fraud.
Renault as expected denies all charges related to the scandal.

Renault emissions fraud - decades old

It seems Renault too - following on VW's footsteps - has been caught with its pants down in a new emissions cheating scandal :

Renault chiefs implicated in decades-long emissions fraud | Business Standard News
-

"Renault has cheated for over 25 years on pollution tests for diesel and petrol engines with the knowledge of top management, according to a report by French fraud investigators obtained today.
"The entire chain of management" up to the French car maker's chief executive Carlos Ghosn was implicated in the "fraudulent strategies", said the report, which led prosecutors to open a probe into Renault in January.

Renault swiftly denied the accusations.
"Renault doesn't cheat," Thierry Bollore, the French car maker's second-in-command told AFP by telephone, saying all its cars complied with legal standards.

The report said there was no evidence of Ghosn having charged anybody else with approving the company's emissions control decisions, which therefore ultimately came under "his responsibility".

Police suspect the automobile maker of putting in place the strategies "with the objective of creating false results for antipollution tests", and so to be seen to be complying with European regulations.

Renault shares plunged on the Paris stock exchange, closing 3.7 per cent lower, after the Liberation daily first revealed the existence of the report earlier Wednesday.

The document concentrates on recent car models, but the fraud investigators -- helped by statements by a former Renault employee -- estimate that questionable practices have been in place since 1990.

Several Renault models were fitted with electronic devices which detected test conditions and then triggered a temporary reduction in harmful emissions for long enough to fool the testing equipment, the former employee claimed.

The first generation Renault Clio, which came out in 1990, is believed to be one of the models involved.

The alleged fraudulent practice recalls the "dieselgate" scandal involving Germany's Volkswagen which admitted in late 2015 to installing so-called "defeat devices" into 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide, designed to reduce emissions of harmful nitrogen oxides while the engines were undergoing regulatory tests.

The German automaker last week pleaded guilty to criminal charges in the United States that it committed fraud by installing the devices and paid $4.3 billion in civil fines.

The guilty plea and fines were in addition to $17.5 billion that the company had already agreed to pay in settlements with car owners, dealers and for environmental cleanup.

Earlier Wednesday, state prosecutors in southern Germany said they had searched offices belonging to carmaker Audi over parent company Volkswagen's emissions cheating scandal.

Investigators from Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Lower Saxony states searched "sites belonging to Audi AG and seven other locations" on suspicion of "fraud and illegal advertising", Munich prosecutors said in a statement.

PS - Mods, kindly merge this thread with the earlier one by vm2011, on the same topic. I posted this thread inadvertently, without checking!

Someone mentioned on another forum- I wonder if this is becoming a stock market ploy to run down auto stocks for brief periods by creating higher than needed controversy ?
Or are we discovering a fundamental truth about diesel engines all across since it became a popular choice for cars primarily in Europe, starting early 90s.

This is nothing new. I wonder if the new "Small Block" Diesel engines coming in new crossovers & SUVs are all the same. You cannot make the engine small enough and ask it to pull an 2 tonne SUV. The stupid Govt regulations has forced manufacturers to make the engines smaller & lighter than required. These small diesels run very close to limits compared to their larger, big block Brethren.

Ask any expert Tuner/ Engine modder and he'll say the same.

I actually got to know of this news recently,I bought a Duster some months back.
I had since many years noticed some other Dusters use to smoke heavily on casual driving also.
The oil they use is called Elf Prestigrade ,which is an outdated API CF rated engine oil which was recommended in Europe for their cars built till 2001. They are not EGR valve friendly, this same question was asked to the service & head engineer when my car was taken for a check up, for which they had no answer.
I changed the oil after running it sufficiently for 3,500 kms to something better.
Not going to use the OEM oil again.
Manufacturers like Hyundai use CH rated diesel engine oil.
Better to use a CH or CI rated engine oil for these engines.
