Ferrari has taken the wraps off the limited-run F12tdf (Tour de France) which packs a mighty 780 PS punch. Only 799 units will ever be made and Ferrari promises it brings improvements in engine, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics compared to the standard F12 Berlinetta.
Its heart and soul is the same V12 6262cc engine, but now it develops an extra 40 PS (29 kW) for a grand total of 780 PS (574 kW) at 8,500 rpm while torque is up by 15 Nm (11 lb-ft) to 705 Nm (521 lb-ft) at 6,750 rpm. All that power is channeled to the wheels through a tweaked version of the F1 DCT gearbox that now has 6% shorter gear ratios and offers 30% faster upshifts and 40% faster downshifts.
Thanks to these hardware tweaks, the F12tdf is capable of running the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 2.9 seconds and complete the 0-124 mph (0-200 km/h) journey in 7.9 seconds before topping out at more than 211 mph (340 km/h). Ferrari's test drivers have already put the car through its paces at Fiorano and managed to lap the track in only 1 minute and 21 seconds.
Other changes include a front tire size increase from 255 to 275 along with an active rear axle known as Virtual Short Wheelbase which enables the wheels to pivot around a vertical axis. It uses a module-based control logic to automatically adjust the rear axle steering depending on the vehicle's speed, steering wheel angle and speed of steering.
Ferrari's engineers also worked on the aerodynamics and the body changes have improved the car's aerodynamic efficiency by almost 100% compared to the regular F12 Berlinetta. At 124 mph (200 km/h), the F12tdf generates 230 kg (507 lbs) of downforce which is 107 kg (236 lbs) more. This was possible by installing a different rear diffuser, new rear spoiler (60 mm longer and 30 mm higher than before), along with a more inclined rear window and a revised concave structure of the trunk.
There's no word on pricing just yet, but obviously it will be substantially more expensive than the F12 Berlinetta.
