Audi has announced plans to stage the world premiere of a revised A8 L Security at next week's Frankfurt Motor Show. The A8 L Security which has been upgraded from the previous VR7 ballistic protection standard to the VR9 level, thus enabling the model to be the "most secure Audi ever." To achieve this higher certification, the full-size armored luxury sedan received very resistant materials in its safety cell, such as special aluminum alloys, aramide fabric and a hot-formed steel armor which all boost protection while lowering the car's weight at the same time.
As standard, the 2016 Audi A8 L Security will come equipped with an armored communication box mounted in the trunk, along with an intercom and a selective door unlocking system. At an additional cost, it can be fitted with an optional emergency exit system, fire extinguisher and an emergency fresh air system.
With a maximum payload capacity of 600 kg (1,322 lbs), the armored A8 long wheelbase can be had with either a V8 4.0 TFSI bi-turbo engine delivering 435 PS (320 kW) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) or with a W12 FSI naturally aspirated motor which churns 500 PS (368 kW) and 625 Nm (461 lb-ft). Both of them work with a quattro permanent all-wheel drive system which had to be tweaked for this armored variant that also boasts a modified chassis. Regardless of engine choice, Audi will electronically limit top speed to 130 mph (210 km/h) in order to preserve the integrity of the run-flat tires.
