Next Gen Fiat Punto Codenamed X6H

After a prolonged inactivity, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has finally started thinking about the long overdue replacements for Punto and Linea. While the Linea successor which is likely to be called as the Bravo is currently undergoing testing ahead of its world premiere at the Istanbul Motor Show later this month, news about the next gen Punto has emerged from Brazil.

According to Autossegredos.com.br’s inside sources, FCA high command has given its nod for an all-new premium hatchback to replace the Punto which has been soldering on since 2005. The technical details of the new car is still under wraps but it’s said that the platform will be completely different from that of the existing model.

Considering the benefits of economies of scale, the FCA Small-Wide architecture which is employed by the Italy-built Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade emerges as a sensible option for both Punto and Linea replacements. However, having two different primary production sites of the upcoming hatchback and sedan would offset the advantage to some extent. While the Bravo sedan will be made at Fiat’s Turkish facility, the Punto successor is reported to have Brazil as its home base.

As far as the branding of the hatchback goes, it’s unlikely to retain the Punto nameplate. Instead, the Italian automaker could market the new model as a 5-door hatchback variant of the 500 series which is gaining popularity globally. The early test prototypes of the next gen Fiat Punto is expected to start its on-road tests in a few weeks’ time in Brazil.

Ideally, Fiat Chrysler India should be launching both the Punto and Linea successors a few months after their respective global debuts in order to be taken seriously in the highly competitive market. However, considering that FCA India’s plans are getting delayed indefinitely

Re: Fiat To Introduce All-New Punto in 2016

The next-generation Fiat Punto will be manufactured in India and Fiat will be looking at exporting it to other markets as well. India and Turkey will be the two key plants were the vehicle would be manufactured and sold across the globe. The new Punto and Linea might be renamed and they will lighter, faster, more spacious and efficient than the currently sold hatchback and sedan.

The Punto for India will continue to be powered by the 1.3-litre multijet but the Linea will get the 1.5-litre multijet that is being developed for the Indian car market. The other engines on offer will be the 1.4-litre FIRE and T-JETs.
The Punto has been codenamed as X6H and the platform is called as X3U. The new Punto’s testing will commence in the second half of 2015 in Turkey and the Punto, Linea and the new B-segment SUV (Ecosport competition) will be launched in India in 2017. Fiat has spent about $1 billion at its Turkish plant to develop these new products.

Whatever they did, if this is going to hit the INDIAN market with out of the box features as compared to its competitors then will surely help FIAT to survive in INDIAN market.
