Buddies,
In recent times it has been observed that many international automotive publications have been lucky enough in getting their hands on the "production ready"/"yet to be launched" vehicles and they carry out an extensive road test of these vehicles and provide their opinions on the same. In India, this trend is yet to catch up it seems since majority of publications are invited to review the car once it is launched or nearing to launch but prior to going to production, the publications here seldom/never receive invite to review the "production ready" car. We have many OEMs in India whose manufacturing units are in various states of our country so why don't they provide the Indian Publications with such opportunity?
A few questions based on this emerging trend I have, I wish we get reply to them:
1) Why don't Indian automotive publications work towards getting test drive review of "production ready" cars?
2) What are the guidelines to be followed if one has to do a review of "production spec" car?
3)Test Mules are driven by company's executives mainly. But if we need to review to production-spec vehicle then do we need to approach to the OEM directly or is there a specific invite for the same sent to publications?
We often sight test mules which are driven with camouflage and different shaped lamps etc but production spec models are those that have been finalized by OEM to finally produce with specific technical/mechanical/electrical guidelines and finally the same production spec vehicle is the one that goes in production line and whose multiple numbers we see being driven around on roads.
It would definitely be helpful for us enthusiasts to know about the forthcoming cars if this trend of reviewing the "Production Models" is considered among automotive publications in India as well.
* Helps in gaining 1st hand information about what to expect from the upcoming vehicle.
* The publication can point out necessary improvisation to the OEM so that the final model that comes out is error-free and more user friendly.
* Considerably cost effective way, the review of production model can also save brand from recalling their vehicle afterwards if the reviewer gives the feedback on niggles there and then itself.
* This can also be applied on the face-lifts too along with the new planned launches by OEMs here.
* OEM's own testing team might overlook some niggles but when a reviewing entity shall do it, every angle can be covered. This way we'll get to know how competent the upcoming car is.
Here are few pics that show, production ready but still camouflaged cars are reviewed just before they hit the production bay and get launched after that.

Difference between Test Mule and Production Spec Models
