BMW has officially unveiled the 2-Series Gran Tourer.
Billed as the "world’s first premium compact model to offer up to seven seats," the 2-Series Gran Tourer is essentially an enlarged version of the 2-Series Active Tourer. As a result, the model has familiar styling but adopts longer rear doors, a revised rear end and a higher roof.
The cabin also echoes the 2-Series Active Tourer but features an optional third row seat that folds flat into the floor. The model also has a more accommodating cargo compartment that can hold up to 1,905 liters (67.2 cubic feet) of luggage when the rear seats are folded down.
Under the hood, five different engines will be available.
The 218i has a 1.5-liter TwinTurbo Power three-cylinder engine that produces 136 PS (100 kW) and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the model to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of up to 205 km/h (127 mph).
The 220i has a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder that develops 192 PS (141 kW) and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to the extra oomph, the MPV runs from 0-100 km/h in as little as 7.6 seconds before topping out at speeds up to 223 km/h (138 mph).
On the diesel front, the entry-level 216d has a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine that produces 116 PS (85 kW) and 270 Nm (199 lb-ft) of torque.
Moving on, the 218d uses a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine with 150 PS (110 kW) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) of torque.
Lastly, the 220d xDrive uses a more powerful 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine that cranks out 190 PS (140 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to all-wheel drive and a standard eight-speed automatic transmission, the model runs from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 seconds before topping out at 218 km/h (135 mph).
