Next Gen BMW 1-Series Hatchback & Sedan Unveiled

The new BMW 1 Series range is to be built upon the same front-wheel drive UKL1 architecture that forms the basis of the new-generation Mini Cooper and the larger, more practical 2 Series Active Tourer.
The 1 Series sedan will give the German brand a rival to the likes of the popular Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class and the Audi A3 sedan.

Little is known about the car, including its dimensions, its weight and its powertrains, though it is highly likely the Mini and 2 Series Active Tourer’s new-generation three-cylinder engine will be at the heart of the range.
In terms of styling, the new 1 Series sedan can’t hide its front-drive platform, with its front wheels set back notably from the front bumper of the car. The shape of the sedan is, as expected, very similar to that seen on the larger 3 Series four-door

Facelift coming next month with three-cylinder engines?

BMW 's entry -level model will arrive in January and among the changes will be the introduction of 1.5-liter three-cylinder engines. As expected, the motors in question are the B38 and B37 sourced from the 2-Series Active Tourer and the new MINI range and are going to power the 116i and 116d versions. The larger four-cylinder B47 diesel engine will come in the 118d with 150 HP (110 kW), 120d with 190 HP (140 kW) and 125d with more than today's 218 HP (160 kW).



Engines aside, the facelifted BMW 1-Series will also get a much needed exterior makeover which will include far more attractive headlights with optional full LED technology. The front grille is expected to decrease in size while the bumpers should also undergo some plastic surgery.

They redesigned the headlamps giving them a more rectangular shape and a lower profile while at the same time, stretching the double kidney grilles and re-profiling the bumper. Additionally, the headlamps now come with standard LED daytime driving lights, while full-LED headlights are available as an option for the first time.
At the back, the boxy tail lamp units were replaced with new two-section rear lights in the familiar BMW “L” shape with LED units that are standard across the range.
Moving on to the interior and besides the new seat covers, the updated 1-Series gets new controls for the radio and the climate control, chrome and high-gloss black surface trims on the center console, and a new M Sport steering wheel.

Standard equipment across the range now includes automatic air conditioning, a rain sensor, and a BMW Radio Professional and iDrive operating system with a newer high-resolution 6.5-inch built-in monitor (optionally, BMW offers a new 8.8-inch screen with Navigation).

For the first time, the 1-Series is offered with BMW's new 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo'd petrol and diesel engines. These include an 116PS (114hp) diesel in the 116d and 116d EfficientDynamics, and the 109PS (108hp) petrol in the 116i.

BMW will offer three diesels in the 118d (150PS or 148hp), 120d (190PS or 187hp) and 125d (224PS or 221hp), and three petrol units in the 118i (136PS or 134hp), 120i (177PS or 175hp) and 125i (218PS or 215hp).

BMW said that the eight-speed Steptronic transmission offered across the range comes with revised hardware and software to improve efficiency, and now offers transmission management supported by navigation data.

To go on sale by year end 2015.
