Volkswagen has held talks with owners of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles about purchasing the Italian carmaker.

Fiat to concentrate only on the luxury brand Ferrari.

By purchasing Fiat Chrysler, VW is hoping to use Chrysler's U.S. distribution network to help solve its own problems in the world's No. 2 auto market where sales of the core VW car brand have been flagging

This news is denied by VW and FIAT personnel.

So Fiat, which owns Ferrari, is selling itself in order to concentrate on a rather niche sportscar segment, which has an unsure future.
<Takes it with a pinch of salt.>

And the last time I checked the news, there was a talk of a merger, and not of selling.

VW Would Have Bought Fiat-Chrysler but Had Internal Fires to Fight.
Apparently, all were valid leads to a degree, since they were all considered but in the end the decision was taken to make sure the company is stable and profitable form the inside, before going ahead to expand.
The ultimate goal would have been to have create the largest automaker ever, one that would have had a 17-brand roster and a sales figure of 15-ish million by 2020
