The Honda Crider, a mid size sedan which is developed to address the needs of China’s new niche segment, has been launched in the country.

Positioned between the Civic and the Accord, the segment is specific to China and is growing at an impressive rate. To justify the positioning, the car is bigger than the Civic but smaller than the Accord.

The Honda Crider measures at 4,650 mm in length, 1,750 mm in width and 1,505 mm in height. The wheels are set apart by 2,650mm.

The car was previewed by the Honda Concept C at last year’s Beijing Motor Show and the production version was unveiled at this year’s Auto Shanghai. The design of the car, with excess chrome and visual bling, satisfies typical Chinese clientele in mind.

The interior, which was not revealed at Auto Shanghai 2013, draws heavy influence from the current Honda Civic and one could see a lot of common parts like the steering wheel and gear selector knob.

The sedan is powered by a 1.8 litre i-VTEC petrol engine which produces 137 bhp and 172 Nm of torque. Five-speed manual and automatic gearboxes are on offer.

The Crider has already reached Honda’s Chinese showrooms. The sedan starts at 114,800 Yuan (around Rs. 11.31 lakhs). The car is made by Guangqi-Honda JV and the main rival is the upcoming Hyundai Mistra.

Honda City based Crider sedan launched in China – Bigger than Civic for India

2019 Honda Crider is positioned on a stretched Honda City platform, making it longer and wider than its predecessor.

The new Honda City platform is a modern versatile platform. And proving this claim is the new generation Honda Crider sedan, which was recently launched in China. Though the car is based on stretched Honda City platform, it is longer than the India-spec Civic, and shorter than company flagship Accord.

In terms of design, the new Honda Crider will sport a large chrome grille, large head and tail lamps with LED technology and a chrome line on the rear. As is seen in all Chinese cars, the wheels appear too small while the windshield is also positioned higher than its previous model.

In terms of dimensions, the 2019 Honda Crider, positioned on the Honda City platform measures 4,756 mm in length, 1,804mm in width and 1,509mm in height. This means that it has been extended 92mm in length, 54mm in width and 4 mm in height while wheelbase has been extended by 80mm to 2,730mm.

Interiors also receive some modifications but continue with its premium stance and ergonomic design. It borrows design cues from the Honda Accord, Honda CR-V and Honda Civic. High quality material is seen in seat upholstery while armrests, steering wheel and central cabin along with door panels are also upholstered with the same quality material.

On-board technology includes both an entertainment and infotainment system which also has navigation and other functions. The instrument cluster is in a three tier design with a large colour driver information display in the centre.

Below the hood the Honda Crider will get a 1.8 liter, 4 cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine offering 139 hp power and 172 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual and automatic gearbox. It could also get a 2.0 liter engine though details are not yet revealed. Exact launch date is also not revealed though it is speculated that the 2019 Honda Crider will be priced from $20,500 to $27,000 (Rs 14.45-19.05 lakhs).

Twin models from different joint ventures is common in China. Honda sells several cars under this strategy in the country, and in the latest, it has expanded the line-up with a Crider twin - the Envix. The Honda Envix has a different front grille, more aggressive bumpers, sportier alloy wheels and an inverted license plate indentation. The interior design is the same, though. However, the upholstery used in both cars is different.
