The recently announced Low Cost Green Car program in Indonesia is gathering the attention of many car makers.

Just a few days ago, Suzuki showcased the Concept G-II which is nothing but a chrome-tipped Maruti Wagon R. Now it seems that South Korean car maker Kia is also interested in the scheme announced by the Indonesian government.

automaker has registered the Kia Picanto with the Indonesian ministry of industry. Kia has registered the car under both Picanto and Morning names. The car registered will carry a 1.0-litre engine with both manual and automatic transmission options.

If you remember, not very long ago, IndianAutosBlog.com readers would catch the Picanto testing every other day in Chennai.

The Kia Picanto is already on sale in Indonesia but the compact hatchback is powered by a 1.2 litre engine that makes 87PS. The car retails at 132.5 million Indonesian Rupiah (around Rs. 7.77 lakhs) for the manual variant and 146.6 million Indonesian Rupiah (around Rs. 8.60 lakhs) for the automatic variant.

The newly registered LCGC car employs a 998cc 3 cylinder petrol motor which develops 68PS. The smaller motor will improve the Picanto’s fuel economy while driving down the starting price significantly.

Mr. Hartanto Sukmono, marketing director of PT Kia Mobil Indonesia told the media that the company has no plans for the LCGC program since the rules are not clear today. However he added that if there is a chance the company will participate.

The Kia Picanto is essentially the Hyundai i10 in a sportier skin.
