Ford Unveils Escort Concept Car at Shanghai Auto Show

Ford has unveiled a four-door sedan concept that has revived the Escort moniker. The C-segment sedan had been a popular fixture in the American automaker line up both in Europe and America for over twenty years. It even had a three year run in the Indian market but was eventually replaced by the Ikon. However, this car has been designed specifically for the Chinese market and will slot into the one of the fastest growing segments in the Peoples Republic; compact cars.

Ford has not revealed any specifics about the four-door vehicle but from the design we can see that it gets the hexagonal grille, fill LED headlights as well as fog lights. The car has a slightly raised stance but a roof line that slopes towards the back and then flows into a stubby boot. At the rear, the Escort Concept has been given design similar to that of the Fiesta sedan, although everything seems to have increased proportionately in size.

There are no engine specs for the vehicle but we believe that it will make use of the 1.6-litre and the 2.0-litre Ecoboost engine. Power will most likely be transmitted to the wheels via a six-speed manual or Ford’s very own DCT box, found on the India spec Fiesta. We are sure to get the vehicle if its put into production but for now Ford has said that this car is a sign of its expansion plans for the Chinese car market that is currently one of the fastest growing in the world.

Ford Escort envisioned in production avatar

The Ford Escort concept was unveiled at the Auto Shanghai 2013 show.

Bringing back the Escort nameplate after a 12 year hiatus, the production car could sandwich between the Fiesta and Focus sedans. Ford uses the C-Platform to underpin this future car. As you may know, the Fiesta is a B-Platform car.

Ford expects 70% of its growth in the next decade to come from Asia Pacific and Africa. The production model of the Escort Concept could play a vital role in achieving this goal.

The Escort nameplate is not something new to India, in fact, Ford arrived here on collaboration with Mahindra in the 90′s with the Escort sedan.

At the Shanghai unveiling, Ford said that the Escort concept is a “new kind of compact car, designed for a very different customer” and it’s focused on providing a spacious cabin and ultimate functionality. However, the Blue Oval hasn’t announced when this C segment sedan will go into series production.

The production car could be a slightly toned down version of the concept. It would have realistic headlamp elements while retaining the shape in accordance with that of the concept. The front grille remains same as the Escort concept. With only the fog lamps getting a signature Ford touch, the rest of the car retains the appearance of the concept model.

for me the Escort design looks like its a cross between Mercedes BMW and volkswagen, and thats a good thing as far as classic designs are concerned wherein Ford usually trusts in sporty designs,
If u look at the front grille of Escort it looks as id the front facia comes from a 2nd generation S class, the side profile looks similar to a BMW 3 series especially the wrap around tail lights that cuts into the side profile of Escort and the rear looks like the current gen Jetta, with slightly modified tail light design, all in all if Ford brings this car to India with a nice interior (similar to the current gen Focus) and with all goodies its bound 2 win some Fluence and Jetta customers, the corolla customer wont be hit because Toyota was allways cheap and it still is cheap.
The engine options i expect in Escort is 1.5l ecoboost engine 177 bhp@ 6500 rpm and 240NM @1500-4500 rpm and the 2.0 Diesel with 138 bhp @ 4500 rpm 320 NM @ 2000 rpm.

Ford Escort spied testing in Sweden

A prototype of the upcoming Ford Escort has been spied testing on an ice track in northern Sweden. The car designed and developed in China, will be launched in China sometime this year after its world premiere at the Beijing Auto Show 2014.

The spy images hint at the production model carrying styling similar to the concept car shown at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show.

Ford had mentioned that the Escort will be a China exclusive product as of now and is targeted at “young and modern” Chinese families. The Escort will be positioned below the Focus in China.

There are limited details on this car but it will get a choice of the new range of three and four-cylinder Eco Boost petrol units.

Although Ford execs in the past hinted at making the new sedan available in markets outside China there hasn't been any final decision on it yet.

If Ford decides to sell the car anywhere other than the Chinese market, India would be one of the markets to get it. The car will be positioned above the Fiesta in India and may lock horns with the competition in the D-segment.

Two observations from the pics of Escort sedan
Interior has much more room than the new Fiesta sedan, its said that it will have legroom comparable to a Renault Fluence and Chevrolet Cruze

Options like moon roof available so that it can be a real D segment competitor

Points to note about Escort sedan
1. Its front wheel drive, I am really fond of the Escorts of the 90s with AWD(they were often called Porsche killers in terms of handling,power,speed, so will Ford bring back those splendid AWD Escorts?)

2. In Mass markets its an Economy car placed below the Ford Focus(Focus is available in Europe/America/Australia and middle East and some parts of Asia) that means its going to be priced some where between 10-16 lakhs ex showroom

3. The engines probably will be 1.0 ecoboost in 100 hp and 125 hp forms, both can be mated with Powershift DCT as well, a new 1.3l 4 cylinder ecoboost motor(136 bhp) is under consideration specially for Escort sedan and might make it into Escort as a midlife facelift iteration and it will be purely based on customer feedback and will join the other engines if and only if the users demand for more power
About Diesels there will be probably 3 choices of 1.5l diesels
1.5 TDCi 90 hp 8v motor, 204 NM@2000 rpm ( same as in Ecosport)
1.5 TDCi 105 hp 16v motor, 270 NM@ 2000 rpm
1.5 TDCi 115 hp 16v motor, 270 NM@ 2000 rpm
If launced with the 10-16 lakhs ex showroom price tag, it could be a real threat for Corolla,Cruze,Fluence but the new Honda Civic recently launched in Malaysia is simply going to dominate this segment, but Escort can be a good 2nd best option
Honda also will bring their new 1.6l i-D TEC with 118 bhp @ 4000 rpm and 300 NM@ 2000 rpm thats class leading, add to it Hondas bullet proof reliability its gong to be a sure shot winner just like Amaze and new City,

The Beijing Auto show will most probably debut the production version of Ford Escort sedan, some off the record information suggests that it will have 36.1 inches of rear legroom compared to 33.7 of current generation Ford Focus(MK III), and that puts it just 2 inches short of VW Jetta in terms of legroom which he told has an effective legroom of 38.1 inches
The other update that I got is that it wont be having the multi link rear suspension as in Ford Focus but will sport the suspension setup that the new Fiesta has,so that price of car can be kept in check
Technology will be a highlight of the car
Ford is not pushing touch screen infotainment system for Escort

Ford escort production model to debut in China auto show April 21st of 2014, it might also showcase it's premium brand Lincoln in the auto show,so when's India going to get all this?

I badly want Ford to release Escort in India, Its a sure hit, what is Fords management thinking of, its a Toyota Corolla killer if released with the 1.5 TDCi and manual or bigger engines are always welcome, Come on Ford even a common man has more common sense to make this car launch to make an entry into the Corolla,Cruze,Elantra,Octavia segment
