This mule is the first evidence Jaguar is working on a 3 Series fighter

Rumors of an entry-level, BMW 3 Series-fighting Jaguar sedan have been floating around for quite some time, but thanks to our intrepid spy photographers, we now have visible proof that such a model is, in fact, in the works.

Despite this tester's XF fittings, it's clear that what lies beneath is an entirely different beast. The doors have been shortened, roofline adjusted, rear deck lopped off and exhaust replaced, giving us a better idea of the new sedan's smaller dimensions and details. The new Jag, which may be dubbed "XS," is expected to ride on Jaguar's PLA (Premium Lightweight Architecture) platform, touting weight-saving materials that should do a lot to keep overall heft to a minimum. Both turbocharged four- and supercharged six-cylinder powertrains are expected to be on tap.

Codenamed X760, the new small sedan will reportedly hit the market in 2015. Earlier reports have indicated that a new crossover – Jag's first ever – riding on the same platform will arrive shortly thereafter, so that suggests that the platform will be fitted with all-wheel drive as well.

Nice find Visran buddy. The design sure looks damn proportionate and aggressive. Though I feel, that chopped nose would be ornamented in the production models.

Jaguar's crucial new compact saloon has been spied in testing for the first time. The new baby Jaguar, prototypes of which have been seen in both the UK and Sweden, will be a compact and lightweight rear-drive saloon that will spawn other body styles and spearhead a significant sales expansion for the brand.

Why is Jaguar coming down the line ? [confused]
Better they keep their name premium rather than launching cheaper cars.
Hope they don't introduce hatchbacks [anger] & please have different face than XF & XJ.

Jaguar styling its 3 Series challenger to make it stand out from rivals

Jaguar’s 3 Series slayer will boast a styling that is “off-centre” compared to the rivals in the segment, according to the British luxury marque’s design boss, Mr. Ian Callum.

Mr. Callum accepted that designing a car for the hotly contested segment is a challenging task but he wants the baby Jaguar to look exclusive and different from the regular products in the segment.

Speaking to Autocar.co.uk, he stated, “It is part of Jaguar’s core values to be slightly off-centre wherever it goes. But at the same time the C and D segments are very pragmatic. Whatever we do on the styling front, we have to be careful that it doesn’t exclude a large proportion of the potential customer base.”

The new compact saloon will be based on JLR’s Premium Lightweight Architecture which employs an aluminium body structure. Power will come from a range of newly developed compact turbocharged motors which would be efficient and clean. Jaguar is aiming to make lightness and efficiency as strong attributes that define the upcoming sedan.
The new black cat is expected to be unleashed in 2016 and it will go head on with the likes of the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes C Class and Audi A4. The most affordable Jaguar sedan is expected to bring more volumes to the table.

Jaguar’s lightweight baby saloon is just 18 months from the showroom

Baby Jaguar 18 months away | Autocar

Jaguar’s lightweight baby saloon is just 18 months from the showroom, Autocar can reveal.

The car caught here on test in Germany is still at an early stage, wearing an oversized fake body, but the mule gives significant clues about the concept behind what could be the most important Jaguar yet.

According to Autocar sources, the baby Jaguar —possibly badged Q-type — will be unveiled in the second half of next year. Production won’t be far behind, because Jaguar Land Rover is already progressing with a new bodyshop at Solihull to build this car and what’s expected to be a compact SUV sister model.

The new bodyshop is directly alongside the facility that already builds the new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which, like the Jaguar, are built from aluminium.

The Q-type will compete directly with BMW’s 3-series and is based on JLR’s new Premium Lightweight Architecture.

Judging by these pictures, the new car will have very short overhangs, a low bonnet and an engine set well back behind the front wheels. Clearly, the aim for this compact, lightweight machine is ultimate handling.

Although this mule appears to be an XF wearing an XJ nose and headlamps, close examination gives strong clues to the size and packaging of the underlying structure.

The mule has very low wing tops, which are close to the tops of the wheels. Despite the fake XJ nose, it’s clear that the front overhang is very short.

The close-up of the rear gives away just how short the rear overhang of the production car is likely to be. Even though the mule’s tail is shorter than an XF’s, the exhaust pipes don’t quite clear the bumper skin.

Under the bonnet is Jaguar Land Rover’s new home-grown four-cylinder engine, sometimes dubbed i54, which is the name of the engine factory where it will be built.

It’s now becoming clear that the baby Jaguar is no half-hearted stab at giving the mighty BMW 3-series a run for its money. Autocar understands that the new Jaguar project has seen very few corners cut. It will be the only all-aluminium car in the segment. The no-compromise package of ultra-short overhangs, wide tracks and 50/50 weight distribution show how Jaguar hopes to outflank a 3-series that is showing all the signs of middle-age spread.

The project’s profitability will be touch and go, certainly for the first-generation model. But Jaguar has a clear, almost unique chance to get into a segment that is expected to grow as buyers globally continue to downsize from executive cars.

As with the F-type, Jaguar seems determined to build a pretty hard-edged, sporting car. Although this could finally break down Jaguar’s ‘country club’ image, the company needs to be careful that it doesn’t alienate an audience that is likely to be over 40 years old.

Jaguar XS Sedan (BMW 3 Series Rival) To Be Unveiled Later This Year

Jaguar, the British marquee has always had a thing for bringing cars that have been a notch above the German rivals in terms of positioning. As of now, the luxury and sports car maker does not have an entry level luxury car offering. However, this status won’t be the story for too long. Jaguar has confirmed that it is working on an entry level luxury sedan that will lock horns with the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes Benz C-Class and the Audi A4. Jaguar is looking at adding big sales volumes with the new entry-level luxury sedan, dubbed the XS.

Jaguar will launch the car later this year. Instead of taking the concept route first, the Jaguar XS sedan will arrive straight in production guise, later this year. Jaguar’s design head, Mr. Ian Cullum has stated that the sedan will break cover later this year globally, before being launched in markets across the world during 2015. The Paris Motor Show later this year in October, is expected to play host to the baby Jaguar sedan. The XS will sit below the XF luxury sedan and will be the new entry level Jaguar car.

Mr Callum has also stated that the car will not be a downsized version of the XF sedan that is currently the entry level sedan of the company and that rivals the likes of Mercedes Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series and the Audi A6. While the baby Jaguar sedan will bear similarities to the XF sedan and will carry a familiar look, it will be based on an all new iQ aluminium platform that was launched first with the C-X17 crossover concept. Incidentally, the C-X17 crossover concept was recently showcased at the Auto Expo 2014.

The new Jaguar XS sedan will be powered by turbo petrol and turbo diesel engines in four cylinder configurations. Jaguar is also said to be considering high performance variants, similar to the XFR-S, for the XS entry level sedan. The high performance variants will take on the BMW M and Mercedes Benz AMG cars. India is turning out to be a major car market for Jaguar and Land Rover. Owned by Tata Motors, these companies are not shying away from launching their latest products in India. Therefore, the Jaguar XS sedan and the production version of the C-X17 crossover are highly likely to be launched in India.
