While Toyota stays a bit indifferent to the Indian market by not bringing any new products until 2015, the Japanese giant is bullish about its prospects in Indonesia.

Toyota Astra Motor, the Indonesian subsidiary of Toyota has its plate full for the year as it is gearing up to introduce the Etios twins and the Agya small car in the archipelago. Otomotif.kompas.com reports that the next gen Vios is also in the queue to be launched later this year.

The Toyots Vios is the sedan brother of the Yaris. The Yaris underwent a comprehensive overhaul in 2011 and it’s about time that the brand new Vios comes out.

The spyshots of the 2014 Toyota Vios suggest that the car draws design inspiration from the Dear Qin Concept showcased at the Beijing Motor Show last April. The new Vios is expected to be a far cry from the current one in terms of design.

Mr. Johnny Darmawan, President and director of PT Toyota Astra Motor has told the Indonesian media that the new Vios will be launched in the later part of 2013 and the car will be imported as a CBU from Thailand. He also added that the car will employ an improved version of the current car’s 1.5 litre VVT-i petrol engine.

The fact that the car will be imported from Thailand hints that the next gen Vios will most likely make its world debut at the Bangkok Motor Show which commences on March 25.

2013 Toyota Vios begins serving as taxi in Indonesia

The 2013 Toyota Vios has been launched in Indonesia less than a month ago but it has promptly started serving customers as a taxicab.

We Indians look at the third box of a car as a symbol of pride and status, but the Indonesians don’t subscribe to this philosophy. They are turned on by hatchbacks, MPVs and SUVs. Sedans have always been relegated to the taxi segment in the archipelago which is why you didn’t see Honda launching the Amaze and Toyota approaching the Etios sedan very cautiously.

Their indifference towards sedans continue and the Toyota Vios, in spite of its upmarket looks, is put to use as a taxi. Seen here are the first images of the taxi spec Vios, sent in by our Indonesian reader Idhuy. You can see that the car has lost some bling to feel more like a cab.

The Vios taxi loses its projector headlamps, foglamps, body colored ORVMs and door handles, and alloy wheels. The car is expected to take on a toned down interior as well. The overall design remains the same and we can’t help but wonder that this sedan would have earned a good brand equity had it been launched in India!

The Vios is powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine which develops 109bhp. The taxi spec car is most likely to be offered only with a 5-speed manual transmission. Private buyers can also opt for a 4-speed automatic.

The Toyota Vios for the Indonesian market is made in Thailand. Due to heavy demand for the new Vios in the taxi market, PT Toyota Astra Motor, the Indonesian subsidiary of Toyota, is contemplating to complement the Vios with the introduction of the Etios Sedan as a taxi.

Toyota Vios gets a TRD Sportivo variant in Thailand

Toyota has launched its TRD Sportivo variant on the Vios sedan in Thailand, with prices starting at 694,000 THB (INR 13.17 lakhs). Available in colors of ‘Super White’ and ‘Black Mica’, the Vios TRD Sportivo gets a host of cosmetic updates, but its mechanicals remain unchanged.

The exterior sees a TRD bodykit with side skirts, a chin spoiler with integrated LED daytime running lights and a diffuser-like element for the rear bumper. A piano-black grille complements the slightly blackened headlight clusters which get projector lights.
New 15-inch alloy wheels, a stainless steel exhaust system, an integrated spoiler and body graphics are other changes to be found on the sedan.
Inside, Toyota has opted for an all-black layout with leather upholstery for the seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearlever. On the feature front, a new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth telephony, HDMI, SD-Card and USB ports, which doubles up as a display for the reverse camera is offered. Other minor changes include TRD Sportivo badges and new carpets.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has indicated that it would launch a ‘fashionable sedan’ in the Indian market, and has started testing the Vios in the country as well. While a launch date has not been announced, industry analysts expect it to take place sometime next year.
