Audi, BMW and VW ranked in the bottom 10 of a study into engine reliability
]

A study was conducted recently regarding engine reliability from many manufacturers in the UK where it turns out the Germans, famous for rock solid reliability, make few of the least reliable engines in the business! In the study renowned manufactures like BMW, Volkswagen and Audi ranked in the bottom ten of the reliability chart which consisted of 36 car manufacturers. This study was conducted by Warranty Direct, one of the top firms which sell warranty for cars in the UK.
In this astonishing survey, it turns out that Audi is second from the bottom, at 35th place just one place before British company, Volkswagen, one of the biggest, most renowned and reputed brands in the world, ranked 9th from the bottom on the list.

Top 5 manufacturers

1 Honda...........0.29%...............1 in 344
2 Toyota.........0.58%................1 in 171
3 Mercedes.......0.84%...............1 in 119
4 Volvo ............0.90%...............1 in 111
5 Jaguar...........0.98%...............1 in 103

Shocking to see BMW and Audi, the leading luxury car makers, everybody's aspirations, on bottom of the list.
Either the buyers are fool or the engine reliability doesn't really matter in overall ownership experience of a car.

If engine reliability had been a deciding factor in the satisfaction of ownership, BMW would not have one of the top luxury car makers around the world consistently for decades!!

Re: German cars 'among worst for engine failures'

what about the reliability of the report it self. What are the factors they consider while coining the term reliability of engine. Sampling process they had done and the statistical measures they used.

Then why BWM and Audi still the leading luxury car makers and even they are technological advanced (in petrol and diesel) than most of the Japanese counter parts.

the report just talks about the engines and not the car as a whole. the reason they are at the top is because all of the other services and products they provide.

and well someone like you and me can't find these things out so obviously someone spent a lot of time to get these facts.

The report does not mention what all comes under 'engine failure'.
Who knows that even loosening of a nut bolt in the engine is considered as an 'engine failure' in the report.!
exactly. you know i wanted to use this same point to favor the report.

why would a nut come off in every 27th audi ? well something's not right and that's exactly the report stated.

these companies are only given thumbs up because of the reviews and no review last for 2-3 years. they just review how cool the car is , how the car handles , how it looks. only the true owner gets to know each and every little problem.

No, that is not the case. The others aspects like you mentioned 'how it handles', 'how it looks' and many others outweigh any minor complaint with the engine. At the end of the day, the overall experience counts.

Its fairly difficult for me to actually comprehend the report. On one extreme is the Mercedes, one of the fav luxury cars and another extreme are the Audi and BMW, again fav luxury cars. If engine reliability had been a defining parameter, there should have been a consistent pattern right?

How the survey is carried about
Reliability: how it’s measured
It’s not just about how many times a car breaks down, it’s also about the time needed to fix it and how much it costs to put right. That’s why it pays to arm yourself with the knowledge of how 35 makes and models fared in our 2011 Reliability Survey. We’ve used Warranty Direct’s detailed claims data to analyse what really goes wrong. The survey shows how likely a car is to break down and which areas are most likely to fail.

How is the survey carried out?
Not every make and model of car is included in our survey – only the cars that Warranty Direct has policies for, and even then only if there are more than 50 vehicles covered. This large sample size means that we get a more accurate assessment of what really fails. We remove vehicles that are more than eight years old from the results; with vehicles over that age, reliability is more about how well the car has been cared for than its basic design.

What is the Reliability Index?
This is Warranty Direct’s quick and easy way to compare cars by taking all the key aspects of reliability into account. It factors in the number of times a car breaks down, as well as the average repair cost and repair time. The lower the number, the better the car. As a guide, an average Reliability Index score is around 100.

How are the results shown?
We’ve listed the manufacturers from the worst to the best, according to how often their cars break down. However, to help you find the best cars in each category, we’ve also listed the top 10 and the worst of all – sorted by their Reliability Index. This gives a far better comparison when considering the overall reliability of a supermini, compact executive or SUV against its peers. We’ve also included the reliability issue that’s most likely to cause a problem on each top-10 car.

the thing is we don't know if they covered minor or major flaws , but still minor counts. read nithin's comment. it has another survey and how it was conducted.

and once again , the report only says about engine and not the car as a whole.
