Launched in Wolfsburg, Germany, the all-new Santana from Shanghai-Volkswagen made its Chinese debut in Guangzhou. The legendary car, with nearly 4 million deliveries since its first release in China 29 years ago, is slated for release next month. Prices are expected to start below 90,000 Yuan [app 7.7L INR].
Beyond the name, the re-designed Santana shares little with the retiring one, which is essentially a Passat B2. "Downgraded" to the compact class, it has a 2603mm wheelbase, close to that of the popular VW Lavida. Externally, the revamp makes it noticeably shorter, while interior room is increased.
For powertrain, the new Santana features the fuel efficient 1.4L and 1.6L MPI engines in the EA211 series. Mated to a 5MT (MQ200-5F), the 1.4 liter can put out up to 66kW of power. The 81kW 1.6 liter gets one more gearbox option, a 6AT.
