Land Rover's line-up is set to expand to 16 models by 2020 - and we've got the details of them all, including a 4m baby three-door, and BMW X5 rival and a five-car Defender family.

Land Rover has embarked on a massive new model blitz that could more than double its annual sales by 2020. It is almost certainly the biggest investment that the UK car industry has ever seen. Land Rover’s future model line-up will fully cover the three main areas of the booming global SUV market — luxury, leisure and utility.

According to Land Rover’s design director Gerry McGovern, the brand is set to expand all three of its model families. The plans include additional models for the Range Rover line-up, a new Defender family and a radical expansion of the Freelander range that will create four new ‘leisure’ SUVs during the next seven years.

Land Rover sources refuse to estimate the potential size of the car-maker once the seven-year plan has been introduced. However, market data suggests the global SUV market will reach 22 million units by 2020. If, by radically expanding its line-up, Land Rover captured around three per cent of that market, it would be close to producing 600,000 vehicles annually.

According to what McGovern describes as a “holistic approach” to its future range, Land Rover plans to extend the Range Rover line-up to six models, including an ‘Evoque XL’, which slots into the hole that currently exists between the Evoque and the new Range Rover Sport and a convertible Evoque. A baby three-door Range Rover just 4m long is also being considered.

The new Land-Rover-badged ‘leisure’ line-up will have at least five new models, kicking off with an entry-level Freelander similar in size to today’s Evoque. The Freelander itself will be reinvented in five-seat and seven-seat forms. The range will be topped by a new Discovery, which could switch to an aluminium platform, and be offered as a flagship to rival the successful BMW X5.

In the ‘dual purpose’ or ‘utility’ segment, Land Rover’s plan indicates that a production version of the Evoque-based DC100 is heading for the showroom, as well as the long-discussed replacement for the Defender.

McGovern’s plan shows outline drawings for five-seat and seven-seat new Defenders as well as a crew-cab pick-up.

This dramatic expansion will put a huge strain on the investment and engineering capabilities of Jaguar Land Rover. JLR boss Ralf Speth has already spoken about 40 new JLR product launches in the next five years. He has pledged £2bn a year to underpin this, with the £10bn investment funding at least one new platform, plus increased capacity in the UK.

However, not all of this investment is expected to be focused on the UK. JLR is wisely spreading its production footprint around the world to take advantage of booming global markets.

Reports from China in early October said that the JLR joint venture with Chinese car maker Chery gained approval in record time from the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission.

About £1.8 billion will be invested in a new Chinese plant that will, in the first stages, have the capacity to build 130,000 vehicles per year, about 60 per cent of which will be Land Rover models.

Reports say that Land Rover sales in China hit 47,975 units in the first eight months of the year, 85 per cent up on the same period in 2011. Its 96 Chinese dealer outlets will also soon be expanded by a further 47 showrooms.

China is now JLR’s second biggest market, just behind the UK, and Chinese tastes are increasingly turning away from conventional luxury saloon cars towards SUVs.

Buyers of premium vehicles in China and Russia are also pushing for the opportunity to buy more limited-edition vehicles and customised styling packs, an opportunity JLR’s design teams are eager to capitalise on.

Back in the UK, JLR has put the finishing touches to its new aluminium press shop at Solihull and has just completed a new quality inspection building for the new Range Rover and its future sister vehicles.

Work is also underway on the new JLR engine factory to be built in the West Midlands/Staffordshire area, while much of the research work into a new generation of super-frugal four-cylinder ‘Hotfire’ engines is being carried out by UK universities, including Warwick and Loughborough.

Land Rover Defender potential ‘huge’ admits LR exec

The new Land Rover Defender has the potential to continue the company’s considerable recent growth and once again become a core model in its product line up, admits LR Global Brand Director Jonathan Edwards.

“The global market for SUVs is predicted to be 20 million units by 2020,” he told MSN Cars on the launch of the 2013 Freelander 2 in Canada. “The Defender ‘utility’ sector is expected to take around 6 million of those sales.

“We sold 16,000 units of the current Defender last year, which simply isn’t good enough. The size of the market shows the potential we have for gains.”

Replacing it, he said, is similar to the task faced by the team that replaced the original Mini. “There’s huge debate in every area on what it should be and how it should do it.

“Managing those ideas and making decisions is one of the major tasks faced by the project development team at the moment.

“Despite its complexity, designing a new Range Rover is a relatively linear challenge. With the Defender, everyone has a point of view and overall management needs to make the right judgments based on the business goals of the company.”

These include, he said, growth in emerging markets and reducing Land Rover’s overall CO2 emissions.

Edwards also revealed he hopes the car will retain the ‘Defender’ name but even this is up for debate within the firm.

We shouldn’t necessarily expect the new Defender to look like the DC100 concept when it goes on sale in 2015 though, said Edwards. “That was very much an ideas-generator, a public demonstration of one way the Defender project could go.

“It is not a design concept that necessarily is being honed into the final product.” Already, it seems, the project has moved on considerably from the car MSN Cars drove at the New York Auto Show back in April 2012.

“There’s no short-termism any more at Land Rover. We can finally plan for the longer term, look five and 10 years ahead.” The Defender project is, it seems, to form a key part of this strategy…

Land Rover to tap Sri Lankan market by appointing a sole distributor

Land Rover is a top luxury auto marque across the globe and has been one of the top 3 premium brands in Sri Lanka for the past 5 years.

The Tata owned British SUV specialist will now foray into the Sri Lankan market with the help of its authorized sole distributor Santhosa Motors. The Sri Lankan firm will enjoy the sole rights to distribute, sell and service all Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles in the island through its subsidiary, SML Frontier Automotive Pvt. Ltd.

Santhosa Motors which is a group company of Access Engineering Group is also handling the operations of Isuzu in Sri Lanka, a brand that was recently launched in India. The company is listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange to fund itself to import and sell Land Rovers since the local tax structure for imported cars is worse than India’s.

Land Rover is not new to Sri Lanka as the legendary brand has been serving in the country’s military for the last 50 years. So, a considerable quantum of business through after-sales for Santhosa Motors is expected to come from the Sri Lankan army.
The operations are scheduled to commence in April this year with the launch of the new Range Rover. The recently launched SUV is critically acclaimed throughout the globe for its ability to offer luxury and all terrain capability in a single package. However the heavy demand for the 2013 model has pushed waiting periods into months, and in some cases a full year.

The partnership with Santhosa Motors is expected to aid LR in expanding its presence in Sri Lanka.

Land Rover to Debut New 9-Speed ZF Automatic Transmission in Geneva

Land Rover will be displaying a new 9-speed automatic transmission for use on its passenger cars and SUVs at next week's Geneva International Auto Show. The new ZF 9HP gearbox was developed by transmission specialist ZF with Land Rover being a lead partner in the project – or so the British company says.
Specifically designed for transverse applications, the ZF unit is rather compact in dimensions, as despite sporting three more gears, it is only 6mm (0.23 inches) longer and actually weighs 7.5kg (16.5 pounds) less than the outgoing six-speed transmission it will replace.

According to the British carmaker, increasing the number of gear ratios from six to nine provides significant improvement in fuel consumption and a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions, while the smaller ratio steps help improve response during acceleration, shift quality, drive and refinement.

Furthermore, the lowest ratio in the new 9HP is far lower than the existing 6sp transmission, with the company stating that it is specifically designed for "off-road use, towing and more extreme on-road conditions like gradients and altitude, giving the driver a heightened sense of control".

Another special feature of the ZF 9HP is the adaptive shifting system that allows the software to learn from the driver's techniques "within seconds, sharpening up during brisk driving then slipping seamlessly into a more economical regime just as quickly when taking a more relaxed approach," according to Land Rover.

“We are extremely excited about the 9HP which has been tailored exactly to dovetail with the unique attributes of our vehicles,” said John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director. “It will add another layer of performance, refinement and efficiency, further enhancing Land Rover’s world class abilities.”

Further details about the ZF 9HP's availability will be announced during Land Rover's Geneva

Land Rover showcases world’s first 9-speed gearbox

Features of Land Rover 9-speed gearbox
*Smaller ratios offer improved response during acceleration and improved shift quality.
*Higher top gear ratio reduces fuel consumption and makes the engine spin at lower rpm thereby improving the refinement.
*Its lowest ratio is lower than that of the current 6-speed gearbox and that enhances off roadabiltiy.
*Has skip-shift function for quicker downshifting under rapid deceleration.
*The adaptive drive system learns the driver’s style and adopts to it.
*Despite the addition of three gears, the transmission is only 6mm longer and is 7.5 kg lighter!

The ZF 9HP debuts in the Range Rover Evoque and is expected to eventually find place in all other Land Rover vehicles in the future.

Can't believe Tata Motors has immediate access to all this technology. We should put it to good use.

Somehow I feel M&M would have been able to make better use of Land Rover's tech than Tata. Maybe LR should be handed over to Mahindra while Tata keeps Jaguar.

Tata will not give Mahindra the jewel they have now in the near future.[lol]
LR/RR is the money spinning brand for Tata more than the Jag.
Using technology...The gap b/w Tata and JLR is huge and Tata cannot use it in the present. Product development in the future in association with Tata can make use of these fabulous tech..[:)]

Next Land Rover Defender Will Be "Incredibly Distinctive"

The next-generation Land Rover Defender, which is expected to arrive in 2015, will be designed to look "incredibly distinctive", British company design director Gerry McGovern said.

"This thing, I can assure you, will be incredibly distinctive. You’ll look at it and say, ‘That is a modern-day Defender’, and there will be nothing else like it. This car will be the bollocks, I assure you. The absolute dog’s bollocks," McGovern told CarAdvice, adding that the Defender would look nothing like the DC100 concepts.

Besides designing a Defender set to blow its customers away, McGovern said that the British company is also looking to expand the Defender lineup: "There’s an opportunity to spin it in different ways, and different versions. Look at Defender when it first started – there was a lot of proliferation in terms of different types of Defenders, pick-ups and all types of things."

The Land Rover representative also suggested that the all-new Defender could follow the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport recipe to become more lighter with an aluminum platform. "Aluminum is something that we’re good at and we’ve started to use a lot more of. It offers massive savings in terms of weight, which means our engines can get smaller, and also sustainability, so that will be very much on the cards as a material that is ideal for us," McGovern added.

All told, Land Rover hopes to sell the new Defender in significantly higher number than the current "antique" model, which averages about 15,000 order a year.

LR/RR is doing exceptionally well with their product line up. The new RR sport looks miles ahead of the model it replaces. New defender is a looker for sure. LR is much focussed than the CAT. They now a days justifies 100% of their tagline "ABOVE & BEYOND"[clap]

Future Land Rover products will stick to just two platforms

Land Rover is in the process of updating its lineup, and a report on Car&Driver informs that future products will be streamlined to two platforms.

At present, the Evoque and the Freelander 2 are based on Ford’s EUCD platform. The Defender is based on an age-old platform that was developed in the 1940′s. The previous generation Range Rover, developed under the brand’s erstwhile owners BMW, shares its underlying structure with the BMW X5, while the new 2013 Range Rover is built on a lightweight D7 platform that is made out of aluminium.

It is learned that Land Rover will only retain the Ford EUCD platform and its in-house D7 platform for underpinning future models. Replacements of the Defender, Freelander and Discovery will sit on variations of these two platforms.

The next generation Freelander that’s seen testing often with a chess-board type camouflage in snowy Europe, and the next generation Disovery, which is yet to start real world testing, will be based on the D7. The new Discovery is expected to touch down next year, going further upmarket, while the new Freelander3 will precede it on global markets. The Freelander is the only Land Rover to be assembled in India.

The stretched wheelbase Evoque launching next year will specially cater to the Chinese market, and the new Defender, which has to be designed and engineered to safely carry forward a legacy that spans over seven decades, are the two other products Land Rover fans are awaiting.

Another brand that was once a Ford group company and is heavily reliant on it for components, Volvo cars, has teamed up with parent Geely to develop a C-Platform that will host cars such as the new S40 and V40, and is in the final stages of developing a range of four cylinder engines bearing the ‘VEA’ badge.

To secure a future completely free of expensive and ageing Ford hardware, Land Rover have the choice of developing new engines and platforms in association with its Chinese JV partner Chery, or with parent company Tata Motors.

Jaguar Land Rover invests for the big league

Jaguar Land Rover is planning to spend £2.75 billion each year for the next four years on new products and new production capacity around the world. But chief executive Ralf Speth insists that the rapid global expansion will not come at the expense of its interests in the company’s British heartland.

“It is absolutely critical that we diversify production around the world, but to be absolutely clear, we have an absolute commitment to the UK and will continue to invest there as long as we have free and fair trade,” Speth told Autocar.

“But a global footprint is critical to our UK stability. That is why we already assemble cars in India (the XF and Freelander), which is a low-volume first step there, we are working on our joint venture with Chery in China, and we are investigating possibilities in Saudi Arabia, where we can see a flourishing automotive business thriving one day.”

JLR has a number of advantages in its quest to dramatically increase sales and expand its global footprint. It is enjoying booming sales and the SUV market is increasing.

“You have to invest in big amounts of seed in order to reap the harvest, which is what we are doing,” said Speth. “We see the cycle as powering growth. The amounts we are investing are very large, but I think we can keep that momentum. It is not a case of investing now and then pausing; as we invest in product and deliver more cars, I expect we can keep going forward at the same rate.”

But the company will probably have to borrow to feed the massive investment that’s being planned. JLR’s profits for 2012-2013 are expected to exceed £1.6 billion. Profit margins in the final three months of 2012 slipped to 14 per cent from 17 per cent, but that’s still way ahead of BMW’s 10.9 per cent margin in 2012.

Indeed, JLR has used up half a billion pounds that it had in the bank last autumn and has already borrowed money on the markets to feed the massive investment plans. Analysts say JLR is likely to spend all the money that it makes on investment as well as borrowing very significant sums.

Why take the risk? JLR has to make a break for much bigger volumes and build a far wider range of models if it is to prosper over the longer term.

Last year JLR sold 355,000 vehicles. Jaguar shifted about 60,000 cars, and more than a third of Land Rover’s output is accounted for by one model: the Range Rover Evoque. Indeed, in the second half of last year the Evoque and Freelander accounted for 52 per cent of all sales. A solid basis for long-term growth requires a wider sales footprint.

JLR also has too many different platforms and is racing to reduce is reliance on engines bought in from rival companies. That’s why the company is spending so much money, so quickly. JLR’s new engine plant is in the final stages of construction and it is building a new factory in China.

In Saudi Arabia, JLR has secured a source of competitively priced aluminium that potentially gives it a technical lead over its German rivals as it moves to all-aluminium cars.

As Autocar revealed last year, it has a 16-model Land Rover range in its sights and a slice of the 20-million-unit-plus global SUV market. And Jaguar hopes to slice away a profitable chunk of the premium market dominated by the BMW 3-series and Audi A4, with a new range of compact cars.

New name for next Land Rover Freelander

The all-new Land Rover Freelander will become a member of an extended Discovery family, according to sources in the company. The new car, based on a stretched Evoque platform, is expected to be launched late next year. The Freelander badge, first seen in 1997, will be dropped.

Land Rover’s decision to create a family of Discovery models is based on a number of considerations. Perhaps most importantly, Land Rover suffers from a profusion of confusing brands. Although the company is called Land Rover, Range Rover is also its own well established brand. And the company sells three families of vehicles under the Freelander, Discovery and Defender nameplates, which are arguably distinct sub-brands in their own right.

The Discovery replacement will be used as a flagship to create a new family of rugged models designed for everyday use and aimed at adventurous families and outdoor enthusiasts. The new Discovery range will be topped by two flagship models based on the Range Rover’s PLA all-aluminium architecture. They will be joined by two models to replace the Freelander — a seven-seater and a five-seater.

Propping up the range — if it is given the green light — will be a compact urban model, not much more than four metres long and based on a shortened Evoque platform.

The new Discovery models will be powered by JLR’s new AJ-200 range of four-cylinder engines, including a supercharged petrol unit.
