Intel had recently announced a speed bump in USB 3.0 SuperSpeed and Thunderbolt standards, doubling the throughput from 5 Gbps to 10 Gbps for USB 3.0, and 10 Gbps to 20 Gbps for Thunderbolt. The new update will also boost their power output from 10 watts to 100 watts. This new breakthrough is expected to be revolutionary not only as far as power consumption is concerned, but also delivery of power from various devices such as computers, HDTVs, and other peripherals.
USB 3.0 specification will have multiple profiles, delivering the highest power output of 20 volts at 5 amps and a minimum of 12 volts at 1.5 amps. The different range of power profiles are designed keeping in mind some operations such as Laptop charging profile, which would require 60 watts (20 volts at 3 amps), and some higher profiles such as powering a HDTV. The standard 10 watt profile will continue to remain on the list.
This means from a single USB SuperSpeed hub, you could power an external hard drive, charge a laptop, and also use a second display, that too without the need of upgrading the current hardware (which includes the port and the cables). There seems to be good future for USB 3.0 and after all these improvements, it's implementation will also be more widespread.
