This happened to me in Bangalore and am rather very frustrated. My Maruti 800 is 4 years old and I never had to change stepney. 2 Months back while cleaning the car I am sure that I saw it and it was in factory condition.Couple of days back, an iron nail stuck the back wheel while driving on country side road and I had to use stepney and to my horror i noticed it was a used tire !! I had to leave my car to service a month back and somehow during that time, they have taken away my new tire and placed a trashed one inside. I am sure if I go to them with this they are going to rebuff for sure coz I dont have concrete proof.
Many of us never check stepney (at least me) once we take delivery of our cars after serivce. It seems like I learned it the hard way. With 100s of cars being serviced everyday, this could be a tip of an iceberg even if they do this to 10 % of cars.
In US the stepney wheel diameter is purposefully kept lesser than other wheels, so that you are forced to go to a service station to fix regular wheels and put back on the car. I am not sure why this is not done in India.
