Here I'm concern with only engine problems and not breakdown due to other issues like clutch.
It's very hard to answer this question, there are a lot of factors involved in order to correctly answer your query.
Based on my observation when you buy a new car petrol engines likely to have some small problems than diesels counterparts. When we consider a long run engine, diesels are likely to crop up issues like head gasket issue, turbo bearings, CI etc. Most of issues with petrol engines are likely to be replaced than repaired.
